    I've been meaning to start a thread like this for a while. Apple Media Devices has two pretty popular threads for general discussion/recommendation of iPhone and iPad apps. This is the Mac equivalent. Have you purchased/downloaded an app recently that you really liked? Looking for a quick recommendation? Post here.

    Fantastical - Extremely intuitive and beautifully designed calendar app that sits in your menubar and allows you to create calendar and reminder entries by typing in your event details.

    Reeder - The best RSS client on the Mac. It currently only supports Google Reader which is shutting down on Monday (thanks for nothing Google), but the developer is working on a big update which will add support for various alternative RSS services. It's normally 8 euro but is free until Monday when it will be removed until v2 is released. However if you download it now you should get the next update free.

    Tweetbot - The Mac version of Talbot's excellent Twitter client. Very expensive due to Twitter restrictions but worth it IMO.

    1Password - Password manager saves and generates secure passwords. May be made redundant for many users with the release of 10.9 and iCloud Keychain, but it will likely retain many advantages. The main one being its cross-platform and browser compatibility.

    iA Writer - Beautifully designed, minimalist text editor. Great for cutting out other distractions and focusing on your writing. Syncs via iCloud with iOS version, making it good for taking notes as well.

    Miro Video Converter Very handy to convert pretty much every video format to make it Mac and iOS friendly.

    Bonus point : Its free and simple to use.

    MultiMon for those of us lucky enough to be using multiple monitors. It recreates the menu-bar, is compatible with Spaces, Multiple Desktops in ML, etc. The best $10 you'll ever spend to manage your OS X real-estate.

    I tried an early version sold under the strap-line "Your Music is a Mess. TuneUp Fixes It. Automatically"

    Well my music wasn't that much of a mess initially, but after installing TuneUp it was a huge mess. Automatically. A later version crashed on launch and the next release crashed iTunes. I gave up. Automatically.

    Alfred - quick launcher for apps and can be programmed to do tasks. extremely useful.

    Cloudapp - lets you share files up to 25mb. simply drag them on to the menu bar icon and the app will create a link for the files to be found. It also copies the link to the clipboard.

    iTerm - great alternative for anyone who uses the terminal. one of the highlights is tabbed terminals

    Having mentioned troublesome applications above, 2 dedicated apps I have found useful in ridding my computer of them are:

    AppDelete which lives up to its claim to "uninstall anything". It gathers the app/widget/whatever and all associated plists, cache-files, folders, data-bases and so on and moves them to the trash, where you can pay them a final "good riddance". There is also a lite version.

    AppCleaner is slightly older than AppDelete but is FREE and does a very good job. I have both just is case

    Boom is a volume booster / volume control and system-wide equalizer that lets you boost the volume of your Mac and individual (or grouped) music files. A word of warning about the latter functionality - the app creates new "Boomed" versions of the music files and can quickly eat up storage space. That said it certainly improves the quality of sound produced from the built-in speakers and is easy to use. $7 is a steal for what it does.

    Ever use your Mac in low-light conditions and have your eyes suffer because of the glare from the monitors? f.lux fixes this: it makes the color of your computer's display adapt to the time-of-day, warm at night and like sunlight during the day. It can match the colour temperature that is most pleasing to you or the colour temperature of your lighting. It adjusts automatically based on time-of-day and your specified location. I wear specs and I find it of great benefit. And it's FREE.

    CheatSheet Just hold down the <Command> / <Apple> key a little longer then usual to get a list of all the key-board short-cuts for the current (frontmost) application. It's FREE and very useful.

    Can anyone suggest a good (and preferably free) app to join MP4 files. A number of movies in my iTunes library have been ripped from 'double disc' movies, resulting in two separate files. Thanks in advance.

    There's no simple join tool AFAIK - I believe the simplest solution to the problem is to go and download new versions of the movie from a free torrent or similar site.

    NOTE FOR MODS: The poster already has legitimate copies of the movies, so is simply accessing a duplicate online.

    Add in all platform support and a cloud drive sync system of your choice and you can have access to your info everywhere. Or for the more paranoid keep it off the cloud entirely and distribute to your devices in a more secure fashion.

    Anyone looking to get rid of Evernote should check out Bear. New app for Mac and iOS. Free to download but you need a subscription for syncing and certain pro features, but it's very cheap: 1.50 a month or 16 for the year. And there's a trial. Supports Markdown and images. Beautiful interface.

    MacStories has a good overview here.

    I ditched Evernote a good while ago and have mostly been using Apple's Notes app, which is pretty good but I'm very impressed with Bear Notes.
