There is indeed. Pacers for every 10 min between 3-5 hours.

Is running not an 'individual' sport? Surely a reliance on someone else defeats the purpose of training to run in a race.

Your not relying on them. They're there to run at a set pace. You can push on if your having a good day, any they sure as hell won't slow down if your having a bad day.

List of pacers is below, most of them are from these parts. This is subject to change on the day (so for instance any ultraman groupies be prepared to move up or down a band)

You'll see big flags at the start with the time on them, position yourself around the relevant time band. Pacers will run steady splits throughout, aiming to finish <30 secs before time goal.

    3:00
    KielyUnusual
    Abhainn
    Robert W

    3:10
    TFBubendorfer
    Torben S

    BeepBeep67
    Grellan
    Jackyback

    3:30
    blockic
    ray lanigan

    3:40

    4:00
    Oisin11178
    40whit

Different for pacers. They're introduced to the adoring crowd at the last minute with their own theme music.

3 hour pacers - mission impossible theme

    3.20 - Lord of the rings/hobbit soundtrack ;)

Others have requested their own music. Rod Stewart's do you think I'm sexy features in there somewhere. One unfortunate group will be introduced with "I think we're alone now" over fears they'll go out too fast ;)

Slightly off topic, and I should know the answer to this already but ...

Given that we will probably be running slightly over distance for the marathon (i ran 26.43m in 2010), will the mile splits be calculated based on the exact marathon distance or on a bit over ?

    Distance To finish in Avg
    Marathon 3:09:50 7:15
    26.4m 3:09:50 7:11

The 3:10 pacers will try and keep their Garmins at 7:10 pace average (well, at least one of them will :D). In addition to that we will gauge our progress against the mile markers and ensure that it matches progress in real miles as well as Garmin miles.

As you correctly pointed out, Garmins usually come in over-distance and that has to be taken into account if you're using a GPS watch for pacing purposes. That's the same for all other projected finishing times as well, obviously.

Thanks for clearing that up. Just want to get my pacing clear.

I think I'll be dropping in behind yourself for a bit of the journey, hopefully things will go well for the group...

I find them a MASSIVE MASSIVE help in races, so - fair play lads! Your work is very much appreciated!

I'll second this, cos there's a fair chance I won't have the ability to speak by the end of the race.
