Stigma attached to going to the gym

I work in an office on a project team, yesterday we finished off a project that we had spent months on. To celebrate the project leader decided to buy us all cakes from the local bakery. One of the girls was put on the cake getting duties,She went around the whole team taking everyones cake request..when she got to me she just assumed i wouldnt want cake..her exact words were "you wouldnt want any cake would ya??" & she was dead serious about it..gave me the your getting no cake look

I go the gym quite regulary & to be quite frank about it, im in fairly good nick. other people on the team who are carrying a bit of timber, they were getting there cake & eating it..no questions asked. Now im not one of these lads who looks at food packs for saturated fats/carbs etc or who doesnt sink pints of a saturday night because of the calories they contain..i train 4 days a week & eat /drink what i want

I wanted cake & lots of it..Now i did get my cake in the end, but only after i was subjected to shock & awe...people were saying you will have to stay in the gym for an extra hour tonight...what??? Even when i was eating my cake it felt a bit like people were looking at me thinking i cant believe hes having a bit of cake. I had worked hard for that cake, months of overtime & working Saturdays & here I am getting questioned about my cake

Has anyone else been a cake victim simply because they look after themselves? Or you been the victim of the reverse scenerio where your carrying a bit of timber & people just assume your mad for cake?

Cakes purchased:
Apple slice..my choice, had to fight for it though
A bun..which in my view isnt a cake & should not have been bought
Danish pastry
Big chocolate cake
Box of jam doughnuts

Have you been telling absolutely everyone that you have been going to the gym? That may be a factor.

I get looks off people when talking about simple and basic areas such as the benefits of a good diet and healthy eating. Bring weights and protein into the equation and people think you're a raging roid-head.

Maybe you should join a support group and go through this terrible time with other cake victims.

Any way you look at it though its hardly stigma attached to going to the gym because someone assumed you wouldnt want to eat junk.

No i never mention it, i do bring my gym bag into work & i do have a t shirt that has the word GYM across it that ive worn on casual days..Theres also a lad called Jim that works for a company id be in contact every day but other than that theres no mention gym from me

I've experienced similar when I was hitting the gym & fitness hard (eased off lately) but I would have been going 5 times a week and eating a very clean diet, the faces on some people when you eat something out of routine.

It's bizarre, when going to the gym as regularly as you are people shouldn't think twice before offering something like cake because you earn it and can eat what you choose.

If anything they should be looking at those carrying the "timber" and asking them if they really want it!

The most infuriating moments though have actually been from friends when you take a night off or skip a gym session and they smugly poke a dig at you saying "oh wow you're not going tonight" with a wry smile as if they expect you to be a robot in a routine. At the end of the day they're just trying to re-assure their own lack of exercise, I've often ended up going to the gym then just to wipe that smile off of their smug face (which in itself may be a bit sad but in an optimistic view it provides some good motivation!)

How would they know you go to the gym unless you tell them? Unless you are shirtless in the office.

People know I work out only because between the hours of 2-4 I'm shirtless walking around the office...gotta let the guns breathe or they could over heat and that's just dangerous

I got an apple slice..one girl got a bun, who gets the opportunity of a free cake & gets a bun? Its not everyday the company buys us cake & she goes & picks a bun, i dont even think she should have been allowed hae the bun as im pretty sure buns dont fall under the cake genre.. Waste of a free cake opportunity

Can anyone clarify that a bun is not a cake as i wouldnt be an expert in the cake field

A bun is an immature cake. I'm not sure an apple slice qualifies as a cake either to be honest. I've never seen a fully grown one though.

See you're just victimizing this person because of your ignorance in relation to cakes. Of course its a cake and if she wants a bun she should be allowed have a bun.

It made no sense to me..she had a scone for breakfast..why would anyone want to follow that up with a bun..there more or less the same thing

A scone and a bun are worlds apart. A scone is essentially bread, a bun is cake. And a bun is on the same level as an apple slice. If you're going the whole hog you go pastry, cream slice, eclaire etc. A bun or apple slice is wanting something sweet but not really treating yourself to the finer options.
