Nct test [tyre age]

I am due an nct test shortly and after the car passed last time the tester remarked that my tyres were over six years old. The tires are actually nine years old as they are the original tyres on a 2004 yaris. The threads are ok as there is only 30,000 miles on the clock.Is it liable to fail because of the age of the tyres. Thanks.

No. Tyres over six years old are always a Fail/Advisory, as is less than 3mm tread depth on the central two-thirds of the surface. Note that less than 1.6mm is a Fail/Refusal.

Yeah they must be perished, I'd change them for piece of mind at this age!

Had this with my wife's Yaris and the original factory fitted Bridgestones too. The car is a 2000 and the tyres were manufactured in 1999, and we replaced them (with identical tyres) in 2007 as the sidewalls had started to develop lots of small hairline cracks due to the hardening of the rubber over time. There was plenty of tread on them, also.

Now we have the same thing again with the new tyres, except this time there's no sign at all of any of the tell-tale signs of hardening, no cracks at all, and we got the same advisory at the last NCT.

Oddly enough I got a fail on my nearside rear tyre being a "different" size even though the same tyre went through last year, accompanied with the tyre on it's opposite side.

Checked and it is infact slightly different :O

I also got a advisory pass on thread depth. To be honest I could throw my fathers tyre on and pass, no worries.

But tyres are the most important thing on/in your car, its the only thing between you and the road. Get new tyres, to be honest it's a no brainer, 9 year old tyres is ridiculous.

Thanks for all the advise, will start to replace them over the next few months.Just hate the thought of spending money on a car that just sits in the driveway most of the time.
