My permission in Wicklow has been very quite. Hopefully things will start now. Or I'll see something anyway.

Just back last night from a spell away working. Was looking forward to getting to getting out in Wicklow as never been there in the rut.

Seen over 30 hinds in 3 separate groups on the same hill, seen no males at all, only heard one whistle in a small bit of forest in the opposite direction.

Tried the evening on another permission, south Dublin. Same, seen a few hinds & calves. No males and not a peep.

Is the rut over or not yet started proper?

Think it needs to get a good bit cooler yet. But i,ve heard a good bit of whistling in differant areas. The weather is a bit fecked up at the moment, the poor old stags are probably rearing to go.

Spent all day and evening in wicklow.only heard the one call in the evening.never seen a single thing and in fairness its good ground.when headin back to the van i heard a really stong call.it echoed through the wood.went down to where i heard it and seen a fine lookin stag.mind you with the lamp he only had one hind with him.mind you she legged it and left him standing there.left him there as i wouldnt shoot with the lamp no sport in it and i know some people will read this and say yyou muppet but i plan to go mon mornin as the farmer told me he sees them a lot in that field in the mornin.so i dont think the rut is on but it is close ;-)

Was out last evening on a different permission, saw a few hinds and calves.
We got some half hearted responses to the call. He was so uninterested he'd only give one call at a time. He was either boll#cks'ed from courting or he still had'nt a clue what he's up to:rolleyes:

Don't over call. I tend to start of with a few mature stags whistles. Then I use picket mews and use a lot of doe and calf squeaks. This is what the mature stags want to hear, as does in season is what its all about and they will want to check out every doe in the area. Sika are not as much of a herd animal as reds and if the does are not in season in one field then they will quickly move on to check out every other doe in in the area. With a good bit of practice you will be able to produce the stag whistle that tails off with a deep throated bawl at the end. This is produced by a stag that is actually with does that are in full season and is mating with them. No way will you call these stags away from their pleasure, but what you are hoping to do, is attract one of the satellite stags that are wandering around the perimeter hoping to pick up a bit of action on the side. I use up to 5 different makes of call, but have 3 favourites. when you are trying to call a stag out into a fields it works best in the evening when they naturally want to come out. For morning calling, you will need to get yourself set up in a wood on a ride line and call there. Open hill you can call anytime of the day. How long to you call. It depends on how far they have to travel. In the evening I will be in position more that an hour before I suspect the first deer to naturally appear and call away till it too dark to see. Do all your practice in the car and not in the field. Some time you will give a call to a stag and the first thing he will do is bolt at high speed for the next county. So its not guaranteed but it will work some of the time.
