Well done, it's great to see you back & doing so well! Are you doing the long run with the club on Sunday? If so, you should come for breakfast after - sounds like lots of people are.

I did my 20 (or maybe a fraction over 20) on Sunday & felt pretty ok. Needless to say, without you & your trusty watch, I don't know my splits / pace / anything, but it felt like an OK pace and took us about 2.55. Just glad to have it done! :)

AND I had my poor old legs dealt with yesterday evening and the physio is pretty pleased with my ankle progress. Hurray! (And thanks to him and his healing hands!)

That's great to hear Helen and that time is not too shabby for 20!
I'm hoping to get to club for early run on Sunday but depends on my eldest's football schedule...breakfast sounds good alright if time permits.

    Tuesday 8th October

    Easy run home from work

    6.8mi @9:44

The avg pace here is a little false due having to slow down as pedestrians in my way in town and also got a phone call during the run. I had my phone in backpack so stopped to answer it in case it was someone important. It turned out that it was...my Physio:D. He is happy with my progress, as I am too, and he told me which exercises to focus on until I next see him which will be the week after next when I go for a last once over before the big day.

No problems with this run. Still a bit of tiredness in legs though. A couple of twinges in hamstring forced me to check my stride once or twice. This is probably just fatigued muscles so need to be careful with the MP miles tomorrow.

Real avg pace was probably closer to 9:20-9:30 range.

Needless to say, I didn't have my watch on, so I'm just going on the time Des mentioned to me when we got back. It could have been slower. It was chatting pace (until the last half mile uphill when it became some kind of death march!)

Good news today is that my back is grand to day. But just as I think I have the injuries under control I now have some knee pain:( .My left knee just under the knee cap.

Felt a weakness in the knee a couple of times during the run yesterday but got through it fine. It is bothering me today so decided no running and did some foam rolling , stretching and cycling instead.

This is not a taper madness type of niggle but one that concerns me now. My physio that i've been going to recently is on holidays this week and I'm not due to see him again until next week(Tues). Not sure if I should just rest a few days now or try get appointment with another physio this week. I'll sleep on it before I decide what to do. So feckin frustrating when things had been going well over last few weeks.Arrgggh!!

Rest up for a day or two. I had a few niggles last week and a 2 day break cleared up everything. I think it is the body just settling down after a lot of hard work and asking for a rest(taper) before the the big one.

Look like you have plenty in the bank, so don't go over doing at this point.

Hope to see you at the start line or in McGrattans.:)

Booked appt with Pearse street physio in the morning. Praying now that it is just tight itb and nothing that will prevent me running on 28th.

The itb is quite sore when rolling so will give that a bash again tonight too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,606 ✭✭✭RedRunner

Went to physio. Looks like runners knee. Gave me some exercises and a rub down on quads an itb.....jaysus the pain!

Booked in for a full massage session on friday and review again on tuesday. no running till at least the weekend and only short jog on grass/soft surface then.

tbh im willing to sacrifice any running between now and dcm to make start line reasonably healthy.

Hadn't run since last Sunday because of knee issues.

On Friday I had sports massage, 60 minutes of unadulterated pain. Whoah! My wife says childbirth is worse, guess I'll just have to take her word for that.

Went for gentle run today on grass mostly to see how the knee felt.
A few times during the run the knee jarred a bit and I felt the pain for a short while but then it would ease fairly quickly. I think it is just generally weak and my gut is now telling me that DCM although it may be do-able is a bit of a risk. Will wait till Tuesday and see what physio says but at this moment in time I think DCM is seriously in doubt. It may be fate that I shouldn't run DCM this year.

Sounds dodgy. I had that runners knee and only rest cured it. And it was a by product of my hip:back issues.
You could try the marthon and end in serious disappointment.
You have London not too far away to aim for.

7pm appointment after work. I've been flip flopping all day as to whether I should attempt it or not, because I have so much doubt, I'm probably better off avoiding it but I'm terrible and I always hold out hope till the last moment. In a weird way I'm almost hoping the physio tells me not to do it so that takes the decision away from me. If he is on the fence I plan to run home from physio (about 6 miles) if that is completely pain free then I have to think about it some more. If I have some pain then I won't run.

Wow. Only catching up now on your troubles.

Tough year for you. Make the right call.
If you run and do more damage will London be in doubt?

    Been to Physio.......

Ran down from work, a little less than a mile. So the physio after examining me and rubbing the left quad out basically said that he could say based on tests he did that running the marathon was possible. Was it advisable though, if he was pushed he would err on side of caution and say don't run it.

He reckoned my plan was good, run home, if no pain reassess, if pain then probably give it a miss. After his treatment , the knee felt better and could do one legged squats on the bad knee without any difficulty.

So off I ran home, legs feeling lovely and fresh and MP feeling easy, but on way home felt the pain again in knee about 3 or 4 times within first few miles especially when I ran into a dip in the pathway or road. So at that point I made up my mind. I'm out. I didn't even bother running all the way home and cut it short and got the Dart home from Clontarf.

    So whats the plan now..

Well for rest of year, break 1000mile barrier for year, new 5k and 10k PB and build up strength in legs and core to avoid recurrence of injuries again while I enter training cycle for London where I will give it socks!

I hope to be doing this still in 10-15 years time so I'll not risk DCM and use the training I've done for helping improve the shorter ones. Maybe try Clontarf half if back in time for that but, getting back fit now is primary goal.

Onwards and upwards and bring on London!

There'd certainly be a risk that I could affect my early training for it so at this point I don't think its worth risking that. London is a blue riband event which is difficult to get an entry for so it is now my new "main thing":D

Oh no, not another one :( So sad to hear about all these forced withdrawals so close to the event. It must be so disappointing, but I do think it's the right thing to do. No point in having a miserable race and possibly long term damage. I forgot you and Runchick had London entries, sure the training plan for that will be starting before you know it and hopefully you will both have great races and get the PB's you deserve.
