I'm not so sure about that for example would Dublin have won their last two All Irelands without Bernard Brogan? and the Mayo minor forward line where free scoring all year i think they scored 2-7 from play in the final.

Systems are great its what has taken Mayo to back to back All Ireland finals however stats will still tell you that the extra class up front normally wins All Irelands.

Dublin might not have won without Brogan but that doesn't mean you have to have a Bernard Brogan.

Like, nothing needed to be different in terms of line up for Mayo to have been good enough this year, there's nothing between Dublin and themselves. If you put a guy who can score 2-4 from play in there obviously it will improve them, but I don't think they need anything like that sort of improvement to make them good enough.

There isn't much between them and Bernard Brogan was the difference. If Mayo are to reach another final in the next few years O'Connor or one of the up incoming minor forwards may be that difference.

They lost by a point having lost Freeman and Higgins from the forward line, the don't need a guy who can kick 2-4. That's all I'm saying.

It's not 100% confirmed on Freeman. Horan has been starting defenders in the forward line all year. Of course Mayo didn't need a forward to kick 2-4 they just needed a few extra points from play and even O'Gara managed two points from play for Dublin.

Mayo will need to add some height in defence n attack next year Black card means frees will be possible to take quickly Any free past yer own 45 would be easy to drive long Target men needed over 6 foot at least two o them in full forward line Gives you more options Just imagine Murphy Mcfadden n Mcbrearty when black card is in If you lose one of full backline you better have height to come off bench as well

Why will the black card make a big difference to this? At the moment you can pump it in long either in general play or from a quick free kick. What's the difference? Am I missing something?

If you body check someone about to take a quick free would be black card So methods to stop a quick free reduced Meaning numbers are not reset or increased in defence making a long high ball more effective from a free than at present as you are more likely to be allowed take that free unhindered. It's common player just steps in front of person about to take free. Player under new rule would try and make some contact look obvious and signal that they had been collided with.

Grand draw. Rossies in Connacht semi just like this year. Would've been a bit more worried by Galway in semi I think

Hopefully get Galway in final can't bate Mayo Galway in Castlebar!

Its baffling that Freeman didn't even get a nomination for an All Star:eek: Cunniffe is unlucky too. Would nearly have had Boyle ahead of Keegan for POTY but at least we got a deserved nomination even if MDM or Cluxton have it wrapped up

Well deserved POTY nomination for Lee Keegan, best player we've had this year

Still firmly believe you need one forward that you can rely day in day out,the so called marquee forward.Admittedly all 6 can chip in a bit but All Ireland's are won and lost on small margins and that's where the Gooch's,Brogan's,Fadden's,Murphy's......... of this world step up.As true today as it was when o Rourke,Tompkins,McCartan etc were in their heyday.Form is temporary, class is permanent and all that.
Cillian o Connor has the potential when fully fit next year to assume that mantle.

Who do ye fancy in quarters?

Gonna go for castlebar, Charlestown, Ballagh and I think Knockmore will beat Tubber

Any word on how the meeting went with horan and the county board on thursday nite?

    Club Quarter Finals today:

    Castlebar
    Charlestown
    Ballaghaderreen
    Ballintubber

To go through I think, although I expect Breaffy to give Ballagh' a good game and I have a sneaky feeling for Knockmore against 'Tubber.....

In the relegation playoffs its Aghamore v Davitts and Tourmakeady v Shrule/Glencorrib.

Fancy Davitts and Shrule in 2 extremely tight games

Don't think Cork had any marquee forward in '10. Daniel Goulding was top scorer IIRC but he's certainly never been any better than Moran or Cillian O'Connor.

Breaffy got annihilated by C'bar in group and were relegation last year. Could see Ballagh winning handy great all round side, comparing to Breaffy who bar the O'Shea's and David Gavin maybe wouldn't have enough all round quality. Had a few on the county minor panel in fairness but a large amount of this Ballagh team would have featured on underage teams in the past. You wouldn't know though I guess

Aghamore v Davitts be a good game actually. Aghamaore are unlucky to find themselves there after being in a real topsy turvy group

Think Davits will sneak it too, they have Mickey C back who missed most of the group stage iirc, and Boyler and the experienced Alan Roche in the half backs who will be also giving the forwards plenty of support. Aghamore will probably put Niall Freeman on Mickey C but I wasn't convinced by him watching under 21 this year

Tom Cunniffe deemed not fit to start. Alan Feeney also on bench

Mid battle will be intriguing- Barry Moran/Danny Kirby v Pat Harte/McGarrity.

Fancy castlebar handy they've some starting 15. Ballina an ageing side, Castlebar could swat them aside easily

EDIT- Kirby starts FF. Interesting, worth a chance here in league next year? David Clarke is back

Barry Moran is absolutely running riot

4 from play in the first half! Mitchells super impressive

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,249 ✭✭✭MaroonAndGreen

Mitchels have not got this won, 5 points up but a very strong breeze in their favor, I think they will be very disappointed to have given away the goal which has kept Ballina in with a shout here at half time.

    This is a cakewalk

Castlebar will take some beating this year.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 868 ✭✭✭Gerry91

Is it possible for O'Shea x2 and Barry Moran to all start next season? Barry is surely too good to leave out

Kirby surely deserves a go in the league in the forwards

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 868 ✭✭✭Gerry91

Barry finished with 0-5 from play. Regardless of the opposition that's a massive tally. Most of them were well out the pitch too. As good as the O'Sheas are, scoring is a weakness on their part and I do genuinely believe Barry is our best midfielder when on form- big statement maybe but I do think he is. He's too good to be left warming a subs bench, is there room for the 3 though?

Doing a bit of a "forwards watch". Douglas was impressive in a free role, however he's always struck me as nothing more than a solid club player. Richie seemed as industrious as ever in the other free role. Young Durcan is one for the future and can kick frees. Walsh is a dead ball specialist but doesn't contribute enough from play. Kirby caused problems and I'm amazed all he's been limited to is an odd FBD appearance (one consisting of kicking a hat-trick from 14).

Regan is the only Ballina forward with Mayo aspirations, and he seemed quiet enough though kicked a few nice scores. Doesn't have enough quality around him.

Interesting to see how Varley does here

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,249 ✭✭✭MaroonAndGreen

Dont expect much from Varley, he never seems to play as well in club games as the other county forwards IMO, looks average alot of the time

Some second half by Davitts a man down

Aghamore v Tourmakeady to stay in senior

After 40 mins Aghamore leaded 14 men Davitts 1-9 to 0-6. Some fightback

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,249 ✭✭✭MaroonAndGreen

    Davitts 2-11 Aghamore 2-10
    Shrule/Glencorrib 1-14 Tourmakeady 1-8

    So Davitts and SG safe.

Aghamore v Tourmakeady (probably next weekend) will decide who is relegated to Intermediate

    Surely Tourmakeady!

Breaffy going well without Conor O'Shea

    Marty McNicholas still playing- amazing!

Great result for Breaffy must say I didnt see that one coming! Reigning champs gone

Looking forward to seeing how Kilcoyne does here. McLoughlin is wearing 15 will be in a roving role though
