How does the VAT get claimed back or excluded completely on a van imported from the UK?

I have a farm and am importing a van through a garage.

yes, a dealer in the uk can ZERO rate the vat on a van if you can provide him with a valid vat no.

so, the dealer you are using can get the vat zero rated (i take it they have a vat no), but by law the have to charge you vat on the sale to you.

the only way you can claim vat back yourself on the van, is to have a vat no of your own.
