Why would letting agent look for pps numbers?

Hi guys any help would be most welcome! My boyfriend are finally after finding a house to rent together! It took us ages and we're delighted! The letting agent has just emailed asking for our pps numbers. Is this common? I've never heard if it myself. Once again any help would be welcome!

Its also a help if you's trash the place or rob it. Helps the Guards trace you through the Social Welfare system.
