Something half assed and awkward which won't work most of the time.

I reckon it'll be something written in the native language of our alien overlords that take over the earth in 3030 (around the time they get around to launching the bloody thing)

The postmen will all be given a code number that you have to add to your address and they will still have to remember where you live.

Mark my words, it will be something this stupid.

No, you're thinking of t'other Mrs Murphy, that was over by Pat "The Bush"'s field.

T'was Maureen Rua Ní Mhuruchú-Kowalkski who died in this one. Yerra, sure they didn't have a bit of luck, the lot of them...

An Post already have perfectly good system but will no doubt be forced to adopt the new system at huge expense.

It may be, but that's not the purpose of a code number. The purpose is one can do away with address entirely, pop the code into a nav machine and go.

On a commercial level like An Post it will sort the most efficient delivery too, however, it is coming at a time when the like of Google is making it redundant, in the areas serviced, one may simply type in the name of a house and Google will find them all, limit your search to ten miles or an area and one can be directed to a single doorway, by name.

Now that's a powerful database and it's [free] and available for 12 months already.

Yes, Ireland needs to join the ranks of, let's see, the ENTIRE world, in having a postal code system just because of taxation. Of course, it's obvious.

Postcodes are old hat. No need to bother with them in 2013

Do couriers just call in and ask for Latitude and Longitude?

Coupled with the callers directions it would be a godsend for the emergency services.

USA uses 5 digits for 303 million people so we only need 2 or 3 digits.

So Dublin City is already sorted.

I spent a few days over in the UK at the start of this month with the family, post codes are a feckin God send tbh.

We had a hire car with a Sat nav, anywhere we wanted to go, Google the place ( example we spent a few days pau ltons park) once you've the address, input the post code, and it is easy drove to.

Addresses over here don't seem to go well with sat navs.

Sometimes, I've given them my Loc8Code, right to the door, that code is essentially the same thing in a more user friendly form. I was given Lat/Long for a pick, after getting lost on the way, to my iPhone and Google mapped to the junction in the middle of the village and my contact then waved me down.

Today the same system is frightening, it's so much better in two years, Sat Nav is great for finding places but it's not yet there for directions and routing [though] routing is coming on too provided all drops are more or less in a line or the same very general direction, it then sorts them by the order.

Google knows everything, but it's not got routing at all and will route as you enter addresses, but it can find house names ~ now if only every house in Ireland had a unique house name, job done.

What's the betting they'll copy the UK post code system so well that there are duplicate codes between the systems and your letter to Limerick ends up in Liverpool!

Don't they already get 30m accuracy from mobile phones ?

And let's be blunt unless it's an Air Corps helicopter there isn't much chance of an Ambulance arriving within the golden hour thanks to all the closures and cutbacks. :(

Tell that to the courier services, they are begging for a postal code system. Likewise the emergency services.

Why would it be a bad thing? Please give as much detail as possible.

She had an awful dose of the shingles.

Prediction for the postcode system implementation? Utter incompetence and spectacular failure on a national scale that wastes millions of public money in the process.

Honestly, they should be using that money to find a cure for shingles.
