Mazda 2 Diesel; smell inside cabin & black soot on dashboard

Hi everyone,I recently bought a 2nd hand Mazda 2 Diesel from a dealer (2005, 1.4) and after a week I've noticed an occasional smell of fumes or diesel inside the cabin.

Also I've noticed a lot of "black soot" particles being left on the dash.

The fumes/smell are giving me a headache when I drive.

Just wondering what could be possibly causing these problems?
    Thanks in advance.

It is probably either a leak on the exhaust or a leaking injector washer.

Many thanks, I'll bring it back to the dealer and mention these possible causes to him.

Either way I think you are MAD to drive it. The car could and probably is filling with carbon monoxide.

Go to a diy shop, buy a carbon monoxide "dot" and stick it on the dash. They use these in the small planes so the pilot can get an indication if something is wrong.

If the dot changes colour I would put all the windows down and drive like that.

I've read from the internet that Carbon monoxide isn't really an issue with Diesel cars.

Normally diesel cars produce 10 percent of the carbon dioxide of a petrol engine. The presence of soot says that the fuel isn't burning fully, and will be producing more carbon monoxide. If it is causing headaches, it is most likely carbon monoxide.
