    Question,
I have an old, cast iron, wall mounted toilet cistern in my place.
The thing works but there is a 'nack' to get it to flush - you cant simply pull the chain - it's more a pull - pull motion.
Once you get it all is good but for visitors it's an absolute and embarrassing pain.

It seems to be a plunge mechanism - level pulls a big weight that pushes the water into the basin ( I am assuming)

Living in rented accommodation so can't pull the thing off the wall
but was wondering if I could keep the look of the old cast iron exterier but take out the inner parts and replace with a more modern solution that would all the user to flush easily everytime without having to know the mystical nack? and if so would it be a big job?

Below is a link to a similar type toilet

Major hard job if its the cast iron bell type. But possible.
Again a BUT. It has to come down, your trying to undo a fitting that's possibly 80 + years old if its like photo to fit New internal plastic syphon.
Cast iron is also brittle and can break Easier to replace it and sell the old one on Ebay
I haven't done one for over 25 years.

Hope somebody here has a better solution for you.
