Quick guide for mechanical engineering

I'm doing a personal project which involves mechanics. I would like to get a solid first hand grounding of various types of mechanical technology, such as gearing, pistons, fluid containers, etc. Is there a guide out there that outlines different bits of industry standard devices and technology?

The internet?

I have the New Dictionary of Civil Engineering and Structures or why things dont fall down as references from my college days. Maybe there is an equivalent for mech?

I actually had a look at the book "Why things don't fall down". Surprisingly, it came in handy
