I don't watch many old movies but I really liked the German anti-war film Die Bruecke (The bridge in English). It's slow paced until the last 40 minutes when the action starts. There's an English dub I think but I've only managed to find a subtitled version.

Your post reminded me of Das Boot. I remember as a teenager watching it as a series on RTE? Scary as hell.

I've realised that modern movies don't do it for me any more. And I like the slow paced older movies more so from the 60s and 70s. I've recently watched "The Conversation", "One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest" "Rope" and "Alfie" Does anyone know of any good recommendations?

For the 100th time - 12 Angry Men
    Also

    Cool Hand Luke.
    Thunderbolt and Lightfoot.

Another for 12 Angry Men- I only saw it last year. Wasn't it Roger Egbert's best movie

    Lucretia Borgia, great name.

I prefer Lucrezia, io preferisco la versione italiana but, whatever, something tells me we won't ever be having dinner ;-)

I watched it a while ago because it's so critically acclaimed but didn't really have high hopes. But I loved it; it is genuinely very funny and enjoyable.

My all time favourite film, but I'm not sure if it's what the OP is looking for.

If you haven't already seen it I'd recommend the Coen Brothers first film, Blood Simple.

I know it's probably not what you mean by 'old' but Charlie Chaplin movies are actually really great. I watched City Lights recently and blown away by how romantic/ funny/ sad it was. It's free on Youtube too.

    Repo Man (1984)

    Otto:
So how much do I get paid, twenty-five bucks a car?

    Bud:
Paid? You don't get paid. Are you kidding, you work on commission, that's better than getting paid. Most cars you rip are worth two or three hundred dollars. Fifty thousand dollar Porsche might make you five grand.

(honking at car in front of him):
    Come on dickhead.

It helps if you dress like a detective, too. Detectives dress kind of square. People think this guy is a cop. They're going to think you're packing something. They don't f*ck with you so much.

    Otto:
    Are you?

    Bud:
    Am I what?

    Otto:
    Packin' something.

    Bud:
Only an asshole gets killed for a car. Guys who make it are the guys who get into their cars at any time. Get in at 3 AM get up at 4. That's why there ain't a repo man I know that don't take speed.

    Otto:
    Speed, huh?

    Bud:
C'mon. Let's go see your friend.

    (snorting a line):
    Jesus Christ.

Never broke into a car. Never hot-wired a car. I never broke into a trunk. I shall not cause harm to any vehicle nor the personal contents thereof. Nor through inaction let that vehicle or the personal contents thereof come to any harm. That's what I call the repo code, kid. Don't forget it, etch it in your brain. Not many people got a code to live by anymore.

Hey! Hey look at that. Look at those assholes over there.

We see a tow truck with a car hanging from it. Four tennis players are running around next to the car and appear to be very agitated. Lite is leaning calmly on the tow truck.

    Bud:
Ordinary f*cking people I hate 'em.

    Otto:
    Me too.

    Bud:
What do you know? See an ordinary person spends his life avoiding tense situations. Repo man spends his life getting into tense situations.

A*sholes! Lets go get a drink.

The Graduate's an absolute triumph from start to finish.

Amazing to think Hoffman was so fully formed as a film actor, so early on in his career.
