    Hi,
    When you receive the Nook it does not have Google play store.
    There is a software update available (which it prompts you to download).
    This update gives you Google Play.
    I downloaded Netflix. Some people have had problems with some apps.
    I do not like the look of B&N customised android so am at present installing Cyganamod 10.1 to give full android using this dummies guide

    What would this be like to watch videos on?
    My two year old is driving me mad wanting my s4 for youtube all day would it handle this handy enough that all i want it !!!

    As I said in last post I was putting Android 4.2 Jellybean on the Nook HD.
    Worked a treat.
    As it has a 1440 x 900 ( 243 ppi ) display. Videos look very sharp and play well.
    Would recommend for watching Netflix or videos.

    I have an order stalled with Nook since last Monday. No reply from their customer service yet, though they have sent me a customer satisfaction survery :confused: I used their online chat this morning and was told I needed to speak with their authorisations department. I'm guessing its to do with the registered address for my credit card.

    Yes, it's more than likely, I think you won't talk yourself out of that. It happened to me, cancelled the whole lot but still waiting for the funds to be released on my card.

    Bought one off littlewoods last tuesday night, arrived today. No problems, but -- I've had loads of hassle with fastway couriers before and I'm not alone - just search for littlewoods and fastway on here and you'll turn up a wealth of horror stories, so as ever, caveat emptor...

    Am I reading this wrong then?
    Delivery to an alternative address - Any address in Ireland including Northern Ireland.|A supplement of €10.50 in addition to the €3.50 Parcel Motel charge, so €14.00 in total per parcel.

    Gone with HD+ myself - the €10 was more a response to aspasp1's suggestion there was little price difference.

    If you want a strict comparison on the HD+ : emulating fastway delivery to your door (€3.50+10.50) still comes out €5-6 saved compared to Littlewoods (€154+14 v's €174). Obviously most are happy to pick up from the locker to save more (where convenient).

    I'm not sure what the €14 per parcel bit is, i think it's for Parcels over 35kg.

    That is for when they bring it to your home. if you collect from their lockers it's 3.50. When i signed up I got 2 or 3 deliveries free also.

    Could you tell me what I have to do? Ordered from Nook UK, address not matching, order canceled, money taken from account, still on hold. Ordered from Argos UK, after completing the check out page, I got some bla-bla about the stock availability and no confirmation email. As I see that money was taken from account too but got no emails at all. Pay 2 get nothing. :-(((

    I had no trouble with Argos but looking at the site it seems to be out of stock.
    I didn't get an order confirmation email, just one thanking me for signing up. If they've taken money I would hope they're expecting more stock but if you don't want to wait I'd contact them if I were you

    Sorry, just checked again and I did get a confirmation email. I also used paypal so I got a mail from them too

    With Argos UK, register with them but put in your full Irish address AND with a UK postcode and country as UK. Specify Parcel Motel as the delivery address.

    I found the easiest way to pay was by using Paypal as there is no matching of credit card billing address with delivery address.

    I have found that with Argos that you get a confirmation of order email and nothing else although you can track your order online but you need to remember the UK postcode on your account.

    HD+ 16Gb, Argos UK via Parcel Motel, Total Cost €160.00. Works a treat after the update. Full access to the Google Play store. All the apps I have installed work fine. As this will be used a a PDF and Comic reader its hard to beat at this price.

    HD+ 16Gb for €130 by buying $150 of discount B&N eGift Cards, buying from the B&N US website and shipping from US via shipito.com. I could have gotten it for under €125 if I had skimped on postage and insurance.


    NOTE: barnesandnoble.com has Nook HD 8GB for $109 and Nook HD 16GB for $119 (CANNOT be bought at this price with eGift Cards), from today until Saturday - I don't know if they're going to do the same over here but it might be worth watching out for. Generally speaking it may be worthwhile waiting to see if Nook prices fall further before purchasing.


    Caveats:
    • No Irish mains plug in box. Either charge with USB only, or need a 3-pin USB to mains adaptor (e.g.)
    • You may find it difficult to get exactly the right combination of vouchers to cover the cost of the HD+
    • Much much longer delivery time
    • Hassle of jumping through hoops


    Here's what I did:
    eGift Cards
    An eGift Card is just two numbers that you type in when paying on the checkout page. I think if you buy a physical card that you scratch off the card to reveal the those numbers. B&N accept up to 3 eGift Cards on each purchase.

    I searched on Gift Card Granny for B&N gift cards. They list gift cards from a handful of discount gift card sites and from ebay. One of those sites is Giftcard Zen. That site only takes payment from international visitors in bitcoins (see here and here), and I bought 2 x $75 eGift Cards for $127 (~€96) from them. At the time there were plently of $75 cards on Zen, now the highest value is $25, whereas previsouly there were $100 cards available. It seems to vary regularly.

    Theres a Gift Card Granny for the UK too, though it doesn't look like they much more than ebay sellers in their lists.

    Their own US site sells the HD+ 16BG for $149, 32GB for $179, but they only sell them within in the US.

    These guys do the same thing as Parcel Motel, but from the US. They charge

    * $8.50 per package. You have to pay this upfront the first you use them, then you'll be able to get an address to use when you buy something, then pay the rest of Shipito's charges once the package arrives at Shipito. For subsequent purchases you can pay all the charges together.
    * $31.79 for postage, if you select Airmail Priority like I did. They say 20-40 days. Yeah, I know. We'll see how long it really takes! The cheapest postage is Airmail Economy @ $29, but that doesn't have the option of adding insurance.
    * Optional: Insurance $3.99 with Airmail Priority, covers loss or damage.
    * Optional: $1 to open your package, take pictures and upload them so that you can check that you're getting what you expect. Also useful if you need to claim insurance.

    That's $45.25 (~€34) to Shipito.

    Choose their Oregon location for your delivery address (no sales tax in Oregon).

    re the US nook Does the nook charge over USB or just the mains cord

    When it arrives with a US plug, is it just a case of removing the US plug, and using a three pin plug, can the charger handle 110v and 220v

    The Nook comes with a USB cable for charging and data transfer. It also comes with a USB to mains adaptor (the plug). So to charge from the mains you connect the USB cable to the mains adaptor and plug that into the mains.

    As for handling different voltages, the mains adaptor takes care of that. For example you could have different mains adaptors for different countries, if you were travelling around, and you'd be able to mains charge in each place.

    The picture in this Nook Simple Charger Kit shows what I'm taking about. Any of the plugs in that picture can be used with USB cable. Or you could get this. You may be able to get a better price if you shop around.

    In short yes, it's just a case of using a three pin adaptor instead of the one that comes in the box.

    Note that USB cable to mains adaptors should work with any device that charges over USB.

    I hadn't noticed the price drop to £129 when I started looking at this. I was looking at a bigger savings to start with!

    In fairness though, comparing getting it from Argos @ €160, and getting it from B&N @ €130 the only extra thing I did is get and pay with eGift Cards. Apart from that I already have a USB mains adaptor so the only other difference to me is the long wait.


    Anyway, someone out there may consider €30 to be worth a bit of faffing.
