daughter is looking for a dog for christmas, quite surprising as she was attacked by a dog a few years ago and got numerous stitches on her face and shoulder, any suggestions of a breed and what age and male or female, she is 9...

Labs are great with kids. My mother used to breed them so had lots of them when I was a kid. She still gets phone calls from previous customers 15 years later looking to buy again.
    Great all round family dog.

Definitely go for a pup. Rescue dogs are great and all but I wouldn't let one near a kid.
Not saying there's anything wrong with them but you've no guarantee they were raised with kids and if they were, that it was a positive experience for them.

As for collie's, ask any postman what's the worst dog for biting.
Highly strung, very jealous, very protective. Probably won't bite your kid but your kid's best friend over on a play date is very possible.

Bred for eating, so if it doesn't work out for the young one, you'll have the makings of a good feed!
They've a funny looking blue tongue too.

We had a King Charles and was fantastic with the kids but its more of an indoor dog and they shed like mad

Had a jack Russell years ago, super dog and quiet around kids

Have a king Charles here too. Great with kids bit +1 on the shedding. Lazy out too. Mother in law has a bichon frise. Great with our kids, non shed but does need regular clipping. They alll have some little kink.

Never thought I'd be back milking cows and not under these circumstances. Family member and his labourer were both killed on Friday evening and the uncle has no family. 140 cows to milk and none tail taped or no board up so no idea what stage of lactation any are at. Milk tank was sampled yesterday but going to have to sample them all individually this evening. Any dairy people any advice as we don't know yet what the plan is short or long term. Trying to find a reliable relief milker asap.

Jeez sorry to hear that AG. Sounds like an awful tradegy. Just goes to show us all u never know what's around god corner.

Whelan we are on our second Newfoundland here . They are about 75kg so a big dog but absolute teddy bears . I would recommend them to anyone with kids . If one of them is crying in the house he will be up on his back legs licking the window in sympathy . We have a st Bernard aswell that is really quiet but just doesnt bother much with the boys where as the Newfoundland will always stay close to them .
I would get a puppy that will grow up used to the way the kids are aswell

Labrador is a good bet. Not as hyper as a collie or as yappy as some smaller breeds. Chow chow has a rep as a biter. Actually a banned breed in some places. Also beware of any pure white breed like a westie. Used to work in a vet's and half the dogs in there were white dogs with mad food allergies.

Number of questions to ask her whelan!

1- Does she want a big dog or a small or in between?
2- Will this be an outdoor dog, indoor or both?
3- Active dog or a lapdog pet?
4- Will she be the one walking, training, etc.
5- How much moolah you want to spend?
    :D

Having worked with animals for a fair number of years, incl being a dog groomer I've a good knowledge of most breeds!

    .

I'd go with that for a young kid. A neutered male is pretty chilled out. Obviously like any breed of dog don't allow the child to annoy him when he's eating which is when most bites occur in the home.

My favourite dog . I had one too but had to get him put down because he bit a canvasser . He was good with kids too but his temperment seemed to change towards being aggressive in the end , broke my heart

Whelan1. - we have a little springer spaniel, liver and white. pure breed with an English and Irish Champions as Granparents. From lovely home in Kildare as a puppy. €250 including him been reg with IKC and chipped by owner.

From Oct to March he eats silage and meal and Jan to March a drop of milk with the calves and crunch. along with his own stuff.

I might put him to stud in time, he is almost 3, and his name is "Buddy" . as in "Fxck Buddy" if he goes into the stud end of the game
