John Cusack has had some turkeys too but 98-03 was decent
    Thin Red line
    Being John Malkovich
    High Fidelity
    Identity
    Runaway Jury
I've thought for a long time now that if John Cusack is in a film, it's always worth a watch, and is almost always very good. It's a pity Grosse Pointe Blank from 1997 and Pushing Tin from 1999 could not have been included in your list.

I have to be honest and say that I don't really remember The Thin Red Line or Runaway Jury. I'm not certain I've seen both, I must put them on the list to watch soon.
Identity I went to see in the cinema, purely because it was a Cusack film. I thought it was a great story.

I have to be even more honest and say that on the whole, I think High Fidelity is over rated. I saw it when it came out, and I thought it was pretty good, but I suspect that it receives unanimous praise now purely because it would be going against the grain too much to be in any way critical of it.

I was trying to pick out a golden period for Jack Nicholson but generally his great films come once every 3 to 5 years.

What the? Are you serious? Because I think you actually are. Can't believe no one's mentioned this 5 year period for Nicholson.

    Carnal Knowledge - 1971
The King of Marvin Gardens - 1972
The Last Detail - 1973 (Nominated for Best Actor at the Oscars)
Chinatown - 1974 (Nominated for Best Actor at the Oscars)
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest - 1975 (Wins best Actor Oscar)

You can pretty much pick any five year period for the guy to be honest.

Yea, i'd have put in grosse point blank alright, but i'd be stretching the timeline a little i thought? and i wasn't mad about pushing tin.
Like yourself i'd always said if john cusack is in a movie it's worth a look.
I think runaway jury is an adaptation of a john grisham book. Rachael Weiss and Gene Hackman are in it too.

Christian Bale had a great run 06-10

    The Prestige - '06
    3:10 to Yuma - '07
    The Dark Knight - '08
    Public Enemies - '09
    The Fighter - '10

I'd say that's one of the best. Topped off with an Oscar for his performance in the Fighter.

There's some good movies in the 98-03 Cusack list, but you've been over-kind in leaving out America's Sweethearts, Serendipity and Max, which came out during this period one after the other.

I'm going to throw some early-70's Hoffman into the mix
    Straw Dogs - '71
    Alfredo Alfredo - '72
    Papillon - '73
    Lenny - '74
    All The President's Men - '76
    Marathon Man - '76

    Jim carrey
1994 - ace Ventura pet detective
    The mask
    Dumb and dumber
1995 - ace Ventura when nature calls
    Batman forever
    1997 -liar liar

Some don't like him but I seen all these when I was a kid and thought he was halarious
    Still do

You forgot The Cable Guy, one of Carrey's best movies imo.

In recent years Michael Fassbender has had a good run.

    2008: Hunger
    2009: Inglorious Basterds
2011: X-Men First Class, A Dangerous Method, Shame
    2012: Promethus

My memory of America's Sweethearts was that it was enjoyable, and had a valuable message that commented on the priorities of contemporary society.

My memory of Serendipity was that it had a fresh idea for a premise and was better in its genre than, say, You've got mail or Sleepless in Seattle, or One Fine Day, and doubtless several others that were all variations on a theme.

Michael "you were only supposed to blow the bloody doors off" Caine
    1964 Zulu
    1965 The Ipcress File
1966 Alfie & Funeral in Berlin
    1967 Billion Dollar Brain
    1969 The Italian Job

    How about Ralph Fiennes:

    1993: Schindler's List

    1994: Quiz Show

    1995: Strange Days

    1996: The English Patient

Three out of those four films nominated for Best Picture (2 won) and I think Strange Days is really underrated too.

He was also nominated for the Best Actor Oscar for three of those films and inexplicably lost out each time, the most galling being losing out to Tommy Lee Jones in The Fugitive the year he was nominated for the role of Amon Goeth in Schindler's List. I'll never understand that decision.

That just shows that oscars are in no shape or form a reflection of best actor etc . That is a joke that tommy lee jones beat Fiennes to the Oscar that year. IMO in the history of film few performances by an actor beat Fiennes playing that nazi ba&tard. He genuinely made you hate the character.

Haven't saw water for elephants but if his performances in the other 2 are anything to go by then he won't be too bad.

I'd have went for Bale myself and added The Machinist in 2004 and Batman Begins and Harsh Times in 2005, but the likes of The New World, Rescue Dawn, I'm Not There and Terminator Salvation are scattered in this period which detracts it a little.

Michael Douglas had a good run between 1987 - 1993
    Fatal Attraction - '87
    Wall Street - '87
War of The Roses - '89
    Basic Instinct - '92
    Falling Down - '93

I was reminded of this thread when I saw that Papillon was on tonight. Steve McQueen from 1968-74 (stretching it slightly) includes:

    Thomas Crown Affair (68)
    Bullitt (68)
    Le Mans (71)
    The Getaway (72)
    Papillon (73)
    Towering Inferno (74)

2003 The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
    2003 Veronica Guerin

Schwarzenegger's run in the late 80's/ early 90s was pretty good.

    1987: Predator
    1987: The running man
    1990: Total Recall
    1991: Terminator 2

Oof. Gotta take issue with you on Arnie here - you've forgotten the abominations that were Twins and Kindergarten Cop. Both very firmly in that era.

    Twins is a classic!
and KC gave us such classic lines as "who is your daddy and what does he do?"

Twins is not a bad movie by any stretch, not in the same league as the others mentioned though. As for KC? Well, nobody's perfect :D

    Marlon Brando:

    A Streetcar Named Desire (1951)
    Julius Caesar (1953)
    The Wild One (1953)
    On the Waterfront (1954)

Also includes films I don't know but seem to be decent:
    The Men (1950)
    Viva Zapata! (1952)
    Désirée (1954) [possibly bad?]
Guys and Dolls (1955) [Brando's casting criticized by some]
