Not a great week for myself so far......but my first bad one really so cant complain too much.

Cut my run yesterday short by 2 miles as I felt a bit of discomfort in my knee, this was due to not resting enough after my 20m on Sunday im sure! So I rested
up today and planned on a gentle cycle ths evening. By the time I got home it was getting a bit too dark and didnt want to head out in the dark on the bike.

The remainder of the (stepback) week is a 7m easy pace for either Wed/Thurs and a 14m LSR on Saturday. Now my problem is im going to be away for the weekend and am pretty sure I wont get the opportunity to run.

    So im thinking I should maybe either;

    a) Do my LSR tomorrow instead of the 7m and skip the weekend run
    b) Just increase tomorrows run to about 10m or so and skip the weekend run
    c) Just do the 7m tomorrow and miss the LSR altogether

Answers on the back of a €20 note please! :P

Not sure which would be the best idea! Already fretting about this.....wait till the taper madness starts! :o

personally I wouldn't like to miss the 14 so would do that tomorrow and the shorter run on Friday if possible? Or 14 tomorrow and maybe 4 or 5 recovery on Thursday if you can't run Friday.

edit: I'd only do the 14 tomorrow if you feel fully recovered from Sunday!

Tried 2miles at 9min/mi, ended up 8:44, 8:57. Won't say it was easy but it's my 5th day running in a row including a 20miler so hoping the couple of days rest will make the pace feel easier.... Will give it a shot anyway, nothing to lose!

What's everyone else aiming for in athlone? Think there's a few of us doing it.

Not aiming for a lot... Just to get through it unscathed , with a PB, with the best finish line celebration prize, and all this while winning the boards team challenge with pac-man :D:D
No seriously though, although i'm aiming for a PB, I'll be happy to enjoy it and remain injury free :)

Same as that Martboy but would like to maybe sneak a PB from it but won't kill myself in the process, I missed out on the team thingy in the Athlone HM thread, how does it work exactly?

There's a few after dropping out so I'm sure they would appreciate some new blood. Look through the flat line thread in the events board and see can they get you in. AFAIK it's a percentage improvement based on your projected time rather than a straight fastest time. It's only a bit of craic anyway.

Somebody warned me about this happening in the past….

Dreams about the marathon have begun! Although that one lastnight was a bit more of a nightmare, got lost from the route somehow and couldn’t find my way back, so ended up doing double the distance or something like that!

Think I might take a rest day now today after that workout! :p

Tough few days for myself! Last week felt brilliant nailing all runs and sessions and finishing my highest mileage week ever on Sunday with a good 22miler!

However, I have now learnt that this training comes at a cost!

Did an easy 6miles on Monday and was quite stiff but managed to get through it okay however, last night was not fun!

P&D called for 9miles with 6*600m in it but when I got down the club they were doing 16*400!!! Spoke to a few experienced guys who said that based on my current fitness etc.. it would be more benefical than doing the 600's. Started off on them and felt really stiff and uncomfortable. Really felt like I had to work to keep pace up. After 8 of them I knew I was only pushing myself towards an injury so stepped out and jogged around for a few miles as a cool down.

Couple of points of note - after a really hard week and long run - I need more than one recovery day! I also need to be more prepared to train on my own! I struggle for motivation in sessions on my own but common sense dictates that I should have pushed the P&D session out to today. Will b wary of this in future.

Also I am now 17 days running straight! Need to consider if the body needs a rest....

Well as I said before if you're following a plan you should just stick to the plan otherwise you're just asking for an injury. I know you have a great running base but even still p&d is a tough plan to follow for a first timer

He's in the same club as me CM so you can see it's not just me that has this issue!!

Geekington, I decided to ditch the club sessions until the marathon, doing the rest of the sessions alone, I think doing the same will stand to you better perhaps

I think I will take both your and CM's advice and just stick to the plan until DCM - no point in doing anything silly!

Glad I spotted this in advance and I really should have listened to your advice before :):)

Work travel meant subbing an 18m for a 13.1m

Did the half-marathon distance in 2:04:00 which is 8 mins faster than the HM I ran in July. I know I shouldn't have ran at that pace but I *needed* to get that out of my system. Slow running is very tough for me sometimes.

I felt fine afterwards. Would love to get that distance done in under 2h. The Charleville HM is a decent target I think.

    5 m tonight.

Oh yeah. Down from 86kg to 78.6 kg as of this morning. 8.4kg in 7 months, with about half that coming in the last 6 weeks (as I started really upping the miles).

What is the wise course of action when suffering from a cold?

I have a head cold at the moment. I went out for 9 miles last night regardless but struggled with it and felt quite poor after it. Don't feel great today either and am thinking that a rest this evening might be no harm even though I don't have a rest day scheduled for today.
What do other people do in this situation? Train or rest up?

The sooner you rest the quicker youll shake it off I find!

You should be able to rearrange your plan to suit if its only a day or two!

I would rest. Give your body a chance to recharge. Maybe take a lemsip

rubbish run tonight. Was meant to be 10 mile but had to cut it short at 7. Just no energy. Fartlek training was a joke - I think I saw a tortoise passing me at one stage. Think the big mileage is catching up on me, Work is manic at the moment and am also planning a wedding (getting married 4 weeks after DCM). So think the body is just saying NO. Will rest tomorrow for 16 mile LSR on Friday. Hope everyone is having a good week training wise

    Hey,
First marathon, Im following the runkeeper app for the marathon, just completed a 18 miler on Sunday and not sure of food etc when running. What is the norm? I ran with 2 small water bottles on my belt 350ml total and took a viperboost energy gel at mile 13. Got through ok, but not sure re marathon, what to eat, how often and should I eat something early in the morning of the race.

Any ideas or experiences would be helpful.. thanks in advance.

With regards to the marathon you should eat your normal breakfast 3 hours before the race. A lot of people go for porridge but you need to make sure it agrees ok with you so practise it before a long run before DCM. As for the long runs I always did mine on empty and found it grand but other people would disagree so just do whatever suits yourself

Now that we have had a bit of rain over the last week or so I'm reminded how difficult it can be if you wear glass's. In training its not the end of the world but I dread to think what it will be like if it rained all the way through the DCM.

The problem I find is that rain drops smudge my glass's and then on top of that condensation builds up due to the rain chilling the lenses. Do other glass wearers suffer the same? Does anyone have any tips? Would a cap make a difference?

did 5 miles tonight and for the first 3 i really wasn't enjoying it,felt like a pure slog and just couldn't up the pace.then for the last 2 miles i kicked on and finished strong,it was like something just switched on inside me.
very strange and no explanation for it,i've been going out first thing in the morning for all my runs lately, tonight was the first late run i've done in a good while so maybe that had something to do with it.

Best of luck to all doing the half in Athlone this weekend. Read the full boards associated thread today & am a bit jealous not to be involved. The team, partner & finish line pose references on this thread all make sense now.

Having a bit of a strange week this week. Have been taking it relatively easy and am doing Athlone tomorrow. But my general mindset is one of complete apathy. Usually on a easy week I get quite anxious about not running, this week however I couldnt care less.

The thoughts of not being able to run DCM isnt filling me with fear like it usually would, Is this just a lull one might get mid training or is it a bit of burnout or anyone else feel like this?

I find myself looking forward to the taper or at least feeling like if I can make it to the taper everything will be ok!

I still have the same amount of niggles as I had at the outset but my mindset has switched a bit more postively to the fact that we are almost 2/3rds through, have just about hit peak mileage on the DCM plan, Half marathon next week, one more 20 mile run and then the drop off begins..
