ok, im not going to rant, but i am going to let people know, just so they don’t have the same experience as me

for anyone thinking of purchasing a 08 Avensis Diesel, be aware, that there is a known issue, where the head gasket will fail.

typically, you will be driving around one day, and you’ll notice the temperature gauge start to rise.

when you check the reservoir, it will be empty, upon re-filling it, the engine temp will return to normal, but a few days later it will be the same, temperature will rise in the car, and the reservoir will be depleted.

(check toyotaownersclub.com for more details, search for head gasket issues)

toyota know about this, but will only repair it with a FULL service history, and provided its under a (7 year warranty or 160000 miles in NI) , in the south, the warranty is a lot less.

ive just got stung with this, having purchased up the north, with what i though was a full service history, but it was missing a few stamps on the booklet, so toyota wont honour it, so now im going to be even more out of pocket.

hopefully, this will save anyone else from the same fate. so be aware....

What was the mileage of your car when it happened?

  • Registered Users Posts: 17,875 ✭✭✭✭MugMugs

Not really a secret. Presume it was the 2.2 engine? Known issue and extends to Lexus aswell.

    Ya, 2.2 :(

Bit of a pisser alright. Sorry for your troubles.

Always pay to research a motor in full when buying I suppose.

Had considered the 2.2 myself but read about their HG issues and stuck with the 2.0

Yeah because this doesn't happen to any other cars out there.
Show me any other popular car out there still running from 1988 like te starlet is or micra.
Show me a fiat or vw or a BMW still running being a 1988. Not near as popular.
Not always the cars fault. Down to the way its driven and looked after.

That's a bit unfair to be honest.

The 2.2 D-4D is a known time bomb.

It's well documented that they have HG issues !

How is it unfair when the comment he said was
Best built cars in the world me hole.

He's slating toyotas over his bad choice of a car engine known to have its faults.

Having worked for Toyota I've seen this avensis come in with problem in the 2.2
But I've done a hell f alot more work on other brand cars than toyotas.
All cars have their faults at some stage but can't deny the fact they are still best built cars out there.

I don't think lexus even use the 2.2 anymore in the IS,afaik they use the 2 litre now instead.

The 2 litre is no angel either.

The is200d is the same 2.2 engine just detuned to 150hp

Think theyre dropping diesel altogether in favour of hybrid petrol

well, im entitled to feel let down by toyota, who pride them selves on "the best built cars in the world" tag, but who didnt recall the faulty engines, with a known head gasket issue...

anyway, i just want to let people know that its an issue (obviously, i didnt know at the time, or i would have bought it)

Toyota UK dont use `the best built cars in the world` tag line.

From memory it was an excerpt from a study done by MIT about 18 years ago on manufacturing processes

Says best built cars in the world
    Not unbreakable.
Still best selling car in the world.
Has to be a reason behind it

Bought a 2008 2.0 D4D in 2008 with 15,000 km on the clock, had it until march of this year and had 128,000 km on the clock and never had an ounce of trouble, loved it, big and plenty of oomph when needed. Only reason I got rid of it was to get a 7 seater because I couldn't fit 3 kids seats in the back. Honestly, it was the best car I ever bought.

Perhaps 10/15 years ago they were with the mk1 avensis, yaris etc. Currently, not a hope.

    look at http://www.warrantydirect.co.uk/reliability_index.html
Turns out hondas are the best, toyta are second. All these people who like knocking toyota focus in on a handful of faults over the last few decades and ignore the vast majority of their cars which are bulletproof.

Yaaaay! Now toyota can add its name to the list of manufacturers selling the 1.6 HDI

    That'd be

    Toyota
    Ford
    Mini
    Mazda
    Peugeot
    Citroen
    Fiat
    Volvo
    Suzuki

Thats only in Europe, the ROW gets a different Hiace, but because of some Euro-Diktat about having a certain length of bonnet or something like that its not allowed to be sold here.

Shouldn't the Title be changed to reflect that its a Diesel 2.2 that the OP is talking about?

Your right but when toyota move in FIAT will be putting their own engines into their vans

    Yes, marketing.
No question that they are a reilable brand. No question. But the blinkered value you seem to hold Toyota in is a bit OTT to be honest.
The 1.6 avensis had a recall if I remember (engine block) and the current 2.2 D4D is no great shakes either. The '98 to '01 shape (comon taxi shae) had gearbox issues. So much so, that there is a specialist in cork that does nothing but these type of gearboxes - albeit driven by the sheer amount of taxi's that use this box.
However, they generally are less troublesome - I have to agree with you there.
But, to think that the only 1998 cars on the road today are starlets or micras is just laughable.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 890 ✭✭✭dh0011

The 1.6 burned a bit of oil but this was before the new avensis came out in 2003 so thats a good while ago. Toyota to their credit sorted the problem when cars burnt oil by fixing the design flaw and replacing engines with a problem even when they had a lot of miles done.

I have been in avensis taxis with over 400K miles on the clock - this is largely why i bought an avensis myself. The fact that taxi drivers with massive miles on the cars choose to go for the avensis time and time again also speaks to their bulletproof nature.

I would agree with the last post that there are lots of other good cars on the road. If dgt reads this he can vouch for the 406.

88 not 98 and you still see plenty of these cars around in 88 shape still going and running perfect.
I'd see a hell f alot more of these two cars from that type of year than any other car.
