I always get the impression that the car has been NCT'd and failed in these cases. There isn't any way to find out if a car has been taken to the NCT and failed it, is there?

Anyway, in my experience these Xantia's are good cars, loads of space,2.0 HDi means it's very economical (50+ mpg on a long run) and very comfy. Nice commercial conversion if you're up to it and then you have half the tax to pay.

Nice colour, nice wheels. €1000 and NCT till January

This has the older, less economical but easier to maintain 1.9 TD engine, and a longer NCT till June '14, not as clean as the one above in the pics but that doesn't always mean everything. €900 asking.

I'm not singling you out here Kev, but I'm getting tired of people so flippantly commenting about easy commercial conversions in this thread and others. 5 years ago it was pretty simple, but the goalposts have moved considerably in the past year meaning many offices require VAT numbers & declarations.

I know a number of people who have had to tax their commercial vehicles privately meaning you get all of the drawbacks and none of the benefit of a commercial vehicle. Its just not the easy saving it once was. ;)

And i,m one of them prob going back to a small car within the month as the insurance on the van ends, no saving at all being taxed private (200 every 3 months)

Fair point Top Dog, but the thing is I know a fair few people who have done this and are still doing this recently, for the simple reason that an estate car is usually in better condition and has been subject to less abuse than a vehicle that has been a van from new.

You're right, it's not as easy as before, but for some people it's worth the couple of hundred quid and a bit of a runaround for a couple of days.

If somebody has been caught out then they probably should have taken a bit more time to research the conversion process properly and maybe rely a little less on bar stool advice.

was only looking at one of the 1.9hdi Xantia's parked up last weekend, needed a little work but not much. Apparently a favorite of the brigade that run on chip oil.

    No such a thing ;)

Be thankful these cars never came with a Lucas with the 1.9 :)

My brothers old bangernomics. Still hasn't moved on from the new owner who had it up on DD within a day or 2 of purchase. He was looking for over 2k for it a few months back and now has dropped to €1550. I love the way he still has "Lady Owner" in the ad. My brother is no lady :p

Too good to be true surely? That's serious value there!

Just a personal thing..... but whenever I see the that the piece of plastic that should be covering where the the towing hook is screwed in is missing on any car It always makes me wonder was there a recent breakdown that made the seller decide it's time to get rid. Just the way my mind works :D

    Which I suppose makes sense.

They are not unlike in an odd sort of way! I have very fond memories of getting ferried to football twice a week in the boot of an '87 Lada estate. Twas 1 year old at the time. Fun times.
Forgive my ignorance, but why does it make sense that they would look alike?

Yes, they swapped the 124 design for a load of dodgy steel basically!

So would that be an SDi instead of TDi,
It's a real go anywhere car... Half expected to see it on a runway in foreign airport ... Maybe wearing a funny sombrero...

No. VW made Turbo Diesels before they made TDIs, I suspect his is one of them

    Here we go :)

    http://cars.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/2002-alfa-romeo-156-jtd-price-reduced/5460532

No mention of tax though but fairly quick cars - speaking from experience and can do about 40/42mpg if driven sensibly.

Looks a bit worse alright now that I look at it again, didn't take much notice earlier.
Still if it's not effecting any of the vital organs it's handy runabout until next May when the tax runs out.
