Good farmer alright and nice couple. Must keep an eye out for the book, I'd expect it to be an honest account of things.

yup, started last night, sorted through the filing cabinet, the laptop bag and the jeep to come up with a fine pile of paper, got them into their monthly envelopes.

was in accountants yesterday, a lad came in with 4 letters about an upcoming revenue audit, the audit is to be held over 2 days , going back over 4 years accounts:eek::eek: the accountant that deals with him is on holidays and the client has only moved to this accountant in the last few months... whats the story there does the accountant apply to the old accountant for the details from the last few years?

When he moved accountants then he would have got the accounts from the last one.
Must be some reason for the tax audit, never-mind the bullsh1t that its random it never is

I'd say your accountant loves you! How do you find access? I've never bothered with it as I was advised you need to use it regularly to justify learning how to use it.

In fairness to Robin he is in the top few percentile of farmers. It's not that he's boasting, and in fact he gives the good as well as the bad. He has the good land, and farms it to it's full potential. Wish I could say the same on either or both fronts!

Yes unless the client has all the details. Remember you have to keep books and records for at least 6 years

    Got to agree.

Took over a client in April. 5 years accounts, vat , rental and undeclared income and revenue had the horns out with estimates of € 250-450k

Oh and the old accountant in cavan went AWOL late April. It was a mess.:o

Anyway we are getting there and almost have it completed.

And the reason for the audit? €125k VAT refunds over 5years.

Another audit recently. Never did farm accounts. flagged on system for receiving a very small SFP. that small it wount fill the new tractors with a tank of diesel.

Interesting info at the heifer rearing open day. 50ha on home block and 20ha leased. Cows doing 5,400l pr 3.66 bf 4.32. Start calving is 14th jan and mean calving is 2nd feb. 6 week calving rate is at 78% and 3 week submission rate at 84%. Cost him 1300e to rear a heifer inc land lease. Very good farmer and pays good attention to detail. Seen very little machinery on the farm also.

we'd be fairly straightforward anyway, but being an IT guy I had to have some sort of "system" so I created a basic access database, I'll add a bit to it each year, dont use excel in the day job so it involves a bit of head scratching at times.

My aim is to have something that might calculate a tax projection and basic p&l

And I tell myself every year that next year we'll do some mid-year accounts to better understand our tax situation, but so far we havent managed that.

Very true. There's pretty much no data protection rules in revenue either, sometimes when a company is being audited they're not actually being audited themselves at all. it can actually be a customer or supplier of a given business that's the real target.

ie you're telling the department that you're only small fry, but they audit the co-op and suddenly they know how much milk you've produced and how much meal/fert you've bought over the last few years. they dont look at paper anymore, it's all exports from accounts packages. some clever boys back in revenue with some data modelling skills can pop anomalies out of the system very quickly.

Why aren't ye're accounts done since last Feb? It's impossible to plan without getting them done early. I get a discount for having all info in to them in Jan

Reminds me of the American tourist who went to a sea good restaurant in Kinsale.
3 fine fat lobsters in a tank. He scolded the manager that it should have a lid as one could nip someone's finger.

The managers retort was 'not to worry they're Irish lobsters. As soon as one gets near the top the others will pull him back down'

These are tax accounts;), I fail to see what having tax accounts done early bring to farm planning, maybe for dairy its different as your whole money set up is very regular
