I actually feel sorry for Andy. He's had no luck since leaving Newcastle.

I think we're in big trouble without him to be honest. Cannot understand why we shelled out on him if his injury could be that bad.

Presume you mean Carlton Cole. We attempted to get him back but by all accounts he's let himself go over the summer without a club so wasn't anywhere close to being match fit.

Can this myth be put to death?

45 minutes is not a purple patch.

that has nothing to do with the injury he has
he has a chronic heel/foot injury that is very hard to get rid of

As far as his time with us is concerned though, it was a purple patch...4 goals in 6 FA cup games, compared to 4 goals in 35 games in the league in the same season.

Expectation was low enough with his league performances that 4 in 6 in the cup was a serious upturn.

Wisdom was talked of as an option at CB in the likely event of Skrtel going, Sakho, Toure and Ilori signed, in other words 4/5th choice. Kelly wasn't talked about too much as he'd had 2 1/2 seasons of mostly being injured.

I don't know what Wisdom did wrong last season to rate him lower than Kelly, not the most exciting attacking wise but neither was he. He drifted a bit too much centrally the odd time, but that was to be expected for a CB, didn't see much else wrong with his defensive game and that was with us weak enough at times CB wise and Lucas either out, or not near his best.

In his defense, Wisdom's Nightmares happened when he was used as a LCB. A Position he doesn't have much Experience for.

The only way hell learn to play cb is to play and make mistakes to learn from em, im sure its the story with most young lads playing in central defence

I'm not exactly heartbroken over that Celtic game, like, he just looked very out of his depth. Loan him out to be played at CB?

Doesnt matter what position it was on the pitch, there are no hiding places in a team that seeks cl football. I dont believe he is ready.

I never thought Kelly was a CB either, i still dont, he may migrate there later like Carra did.

I brought up 10/11 because you were making a point of Wisdom being 20 yrs old. In 10/11 Kelly was 20 years old. So in the interests of balance i brought up some things that happened re Kelly when he was Wisdom's age. If he goes on to make some man of the match performances and get a senior call up to England i will happily take back the point about him not making as much progress as Kelly at the same age.

Wisdom is only ahead of Kelly right now in terms of games at the age of 20 (imo) because now we dont bring in poor players like Degen/Dossena to take game time away from our better younger players. Kelly would have got far more games if the wages of those two players didnt have to be justified by selection imo. Degen got picked (not often i know) before Kelly. Dossena was so awful and still got picked but it was only when he left and Johnson moved over that Kelly got his chance. I dont think Wisdom having played a handful more games or Kelly playing a few less is a reflection of what im getting to get at here. Which in essence is quite simple, i rate Kelly higher than Wisdom, at any age.

Kelly was 20 at the start of the 10/11 season and was 21 before it was over. Wisdom is 20 now going into the start of the 13/14 season and will be 21 just before it ends, so we cannot compare Kelly's 20/21 season to that of Wisdom because Wisdom is only be having his 20/21 season now.

Fair enough you rate Kelly more than Wisdom age for age, but I rate Wisdom more than Kelly age for age to date. You are basing your opinion on whatever you have seen of each player and I am doing likewise.

As for Degan and Dossena. Well that is down to Rafa picking them over Kelly. Maybe Rafa thought Kelly was not quite ready at that time, because I sure as hell would not buy into a theory suggesting that Rafa Benitez of all men would play players simply to justify their wages.

Wisdom is the same height as Carra, isn't he?

    Also, he's an absolute beast.

He is six foot one inch.

Same height as Carragher. An inch taller than Toure and an inch shorter than Sakho. Two inches shorter than Kelly, Agger, and Skrtel according to wiki. Too lazy to get the heights of the rest of our back line. :)

Agger had half a dozen of those against similar physical strikers last season.

It wasn't nearly that bad either.
