Buy 'any' 2gb Chinese tablet and install latest Android?

    Background: I installed Linux Mint on an old Windows computer. It deleted everything and installed Linux. Took about 30mins and I ended up with a new computer. Happy days!

    What's the deal with tablets?

    I've been looking at getting myself a tablet computer. Looking around, the 'no-brand' Chinese tablets look pretty cheap but there's always some limitation. Usually, the ROM is only 512Mb instead of 1 or 2GB. I suspect you'll need 2GB pretty soon to run a decent Android tablet.

    So I'm wondering if I saw a 'Chinese' tablet with specs I liked, could I buy it and then delete everything and reinstall Android 4.2, 4.3, (or 4.4 when it comes out)? I've heard of cyanogenmod, xda-developers, custom ROMs etc. for upgrading phones and tablets but I don't fully understand it 100%.

    I'm wondering if I'm missing something obvious. Can I just buy any old Chinese tablet, delete everything and install the latest Android (provided it has the right specs)?

    Pc's are built to a standard spec and Linux has drivers for most hardware options, this is tried and tested and it works.

    Android on the other hand won't port easily to different hardware. When a new version is released there is significant work by devs to get it working on different devices, and even then it is never perfectly stable.

    So unless the tablet you buy has a bit of a developer community then it's not just a matter wiping and installing.
