Hmmmm....although it worked out in the end, I wasn't too happy when we beat Blackburn in '95.

Given a similar situation(ie us beating a team hands the league to a big rival) I wouldn't be too put out if we didnt try and win.

OK, you might have me on that one specific game, and for more than just the obvious reason.

I was in first year in college at the time, and in March found a betting slip in a cupboard of a bet I put on in August. It was a £2 bet on the following teams to win their leagues:

    PL: Blackburn
Div 1 (as it was then): Middlesboro
    Div 2: Birmingham
    SPL: Rangers

I looked at it and though "hold on, this has a chance", so I kept it in mind over the next couple of months. On the day of the Liverpool v Blackburn and WHU vs Man U games the other teams on my bet had all secured their titles. I was watching the games in the college bar and I really didn't know which way was up and what I wanted to happen. It went against everything I knew to not want Liverpool to win, so I essentially just kept nervously quiet throughout the matches hoping that West Ham would do everyone a favour.

My relief at the perfect outcome having seen Andy Cole miss chance after chance and LFC getting a win as well was massive. It was a £2 bet at odds of 387.5/1, and in 1995 for a student when a pint of beer still cost less than £2, that was huge. I had never had so much money and I was so paranoid that I got my older brother to collect the winnings as I was still just 17 (if barely) when I put on the bet in the first place.

I thought maybe I was some great football prognosticator, but it turns out I was just lucky getting it right that season. Pity I didn't stretch to a fiver :D

    Good times.

Sakho can play LB as well, replace Ilori with Sakho at LB and put Lucas or Gerrard in midfield and I'd be Ok with that team.

id just be worried about gerrard or lucas getting injured

sakho and ilori have both played left back and def mid aswell. ilori would have more pace so it depends who is on the wing.

i just think that to spite united in one game we could get an injury to either gerrard or lucas and destroy our midfield

That LFC paid forum isnt the haven you might imagine.

Boards should rent out it's own little forum spaces for privats clubs of all kinds, maybe.

yea alot of the lads on here use to be on the official site. the paid forum is just rubbish though. same as here but you pay for it.

can you not just do pm chats if you want private debates? as in can you pm multiple people at once in a conversation type thing

    Sturridge
    ----Suarez
    Moses

    Coutiniho
    Gerrard
    Lucas

    Enrique
    Agger----Sakho----Johnson

    Mingolet

BENCH: Jones, Skrtel, Toure, Llori, Cissokho, Kelly, Wisdom, Henderson, Allen, Aspas, Sterling, Ibe, Alberto

We may not have got the new top quality attacker that we needed but by my count we brought in three players that improve our first XI, to add the two (Sturridge and Coutiniho) we brought in last January. We have also improved our bench significantly. Many are probably disappointed by the lack of a marquee signing (Sakho aside) but it's probably the best approach until we get back into the top four.

Nah, Moyes will play the kids, Utd usually do in the League Cup until the quarters ;)

United have a new manager now.
A manager who has never won a trophy before.
Id say he will play a very decent squad.

Real shame, cause I thought they could have won the Carling that year.

    :pac:

id love to see sturridge get 20 league goals for us this season. not many teams have 2 strikers who can score more than 20 goals and not finish in the top 4.

your right about waiting until we get top 4. without top 4 we almost had costa or mhky as our marquee signing. with top 4 we might get derossi alonso mash type of marquee signings. surely that type of money suits them better

Antonio Adan has been released by Madrid and now a free agent.

why the hell aint we chasing Adan as GK backup? seeing we went after Given.

Haven't posted since the match as I was straight onto the Kerry game after...unfortunately.

Very good win against United, we were at home so 1 point was the minimum we should be expecting from that match. There are a number of reasons I was absolutely delighted when the final whistle blew though:

    1) Three games, 9 points, two home games, 6 points - we need to make Anfield a fortress this season in order to do well and push for 4th and so far we've done well.

    2) Mentality - people in the past have likened Rodgers to David Brent and how he talks rubbish sometimes, something he mentioned alot last year was the mentality of the squad, which was weak - too many times we threw away good positions and squandered league points that were there for the taking. In all three games this season, we've done well, setup ourselves well defensively and countered. Three clean sheets thus far would suggest that we've showed a bit of mettle in grinding out results, maybe there was an element of luck involved, but overall, we've showed steel to collect the 3 on Sunday

    3) FSG came under scrutiny for being tight with spending - while we didn't get a marquee signing, we've brought in some pace and power with Moses (something Ibe & Sterling offer only one of - Sterling was bullied by Valencia physically 2nd half, I'd expect Moses to pose more of a threat) we've also signed a very strong CB in Sahko, with ILori providing cover and potential. Overall this window, we've improved the squad from a defensive & attacking POV, midfield is the only place we're somewhat bare, but even then we can be happy with the business we've done.

    4) Considering we were crying out for signings, the initial squad we've started this season with have gotten us maximum points thus far, we couldn't ask for more and great credit should go to the likes of Sturridge, Henderson, Toure, Rodgers etc. for attaining that good start.

Hopefully with the additional players we've brought in, and with Suarez coming back, we can continue the good start and get some momentum going - when you consider we haven't played very well for more than 45mins, there's more to be had from this team.

I'm feeling optimistic right now and it feels....strange :D

In fairness, before your edit you talked about a lot of stuff you had to scroll past, I'm sure some people would feel the same about Arsenal injury worries.

Yeah, fair point well made. Thought the pre-edit was a bit harsh, but every time I read pointless back and forths on Ozil, it just comes back up...

More to the point: someone made the suggestion earlier of 3-5-2/5-3-2 now being deployed by Rodgers and, in truth, given the way our purchases have gone, I can't see around this - I think Rodgers will be deploying it in a fair few away games, with Johnson and Cissokho moving further up the wings, and Agger/Toure/Sakho in the centre. This would make sense given the purchases, and would give us sufficient options.

In terms of Suarez returning up front, I came across this which I found interesting: http://eplindex.com/30366/shot-placement-stats-michu-cisse-surez.html - it's a little dated, but I think it makes some interesting points.

EDIT: http://eplindex.com/39072/glen-johnson-injury-wisdom-vs-kelly-comparison.html - Actually this just went up today and is surely worthy of a bit of chat too - side by side of Wisdom Vs. Kelly. Wisdom didn't look too well in the last few games I saw - though in October against Reading when I saw him in Anfield he looked great... again, for the bit against United I thought he looked tricky enough and was happy, though nervous. The only thing with this stats comparison between 12 games is to take into account the difficulty level of each game played and put a weighting on that which would give a more accurate outcome... still worth a think though.

In fairness, I shouldnt take you to task on an edit. You edited it for a reason. I can see why you'd want a forum for specifically what you're after, though, I wouldn't say you're alone, there seems to have been a lot of posters dropping out of the circus.

Why does everyone keep putting Sakho in as RCB?

Is this some Wishful Thinking or some Secret Info, I'm not privy to?

I'm not an Expert on him, in fact I've only seen him twice for PSG, but from the 2 Compilation Vids that were posted on here, you could clearly see, he is as 1-footed as Enrique.

Every Tackle he made, every Pass was done with his Left.

Now, I'm not saying that someone predominantly Left-footed can't be a success playing RCB. But surely it makes more sense to move Agger to RCB, if you really want to play him that is, than Sakho?

Besides, I highly doubt someone of Sakho's Stature would have come here, unless we've promise him the Starting LCB Position.

    Yup.

That's why it didn't make sense to me, why many are putting them on the same Line-up.

I don't know, maybe we'll play Sakho as RCB, like many here seems to think.

But that's another Putting a Square Peg in a Round Hole Solution. Which to me, has always been one of the Problems this Club has, and I think it's high-time we move away from there.

yea i think alot of people are over looking aggers form over teh last couple of years. yes everyone is entitled to have bad spells but thats why competition is there. i think it wouldnt be a bad thing to have Toure and Sakho partnered together. Sakho could learn from Toure and then when Toure is coming to the end of his career we can put Ilori in to take his place and Sakho will have had the couple of years of Toure's presence to mature him as a defender

i dont think skrtel and agger will be here this time next season. and just becuase they are loyal it shouldnt mean they deserve a starting spot. if anything skrtel has been a better defender in the last 3 or 4 years(overall) but because agger is a ball playing defender and has ynwa tattoed on his knuckles people dont seem to agree

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,447 ✭✭✭✭noodler

I've always thought of Agger being one-footed.

I can't think of any examples of hand though!

Perhaps, subtle touches on his right are just being lost on me because he does his noticable stuff like passing, driving forward, shooting etc with his right.

Is there any examples of top teams that play with two CD who are both left or right footed?

YES he is one footed. at least he is mostly one footed. he is a left footed player. has he ever played on the right side of the center back???

im sure there are. im sure we have played with two right footed defenders

listen i think that a left sided defender can play rcb and i said it in an earlier post

but i dont think agger is better than toure right now and if anyone is being replaced its agger

Bayern have been known to play two left footed a fair bit.

Two right footed is extremely common, but you'll often find that there are right footed players who specialise in the LCB role.

Thiago Silva, Hummels, and I think Vidic are all right footed LCBs, and there are plenty more of them tbh.

Off the top of my head

    Dortmund - Hummels and Subotić
    Bayern - Boetang and Dante

PSG - Thiago Silva, Alex and Marquinhos

Atleti - Godin and Miranda, can include Alderweireld now as well.
Real - Pepe, Ramos and Varene
Barca - Pique and Puyol, can include Mascherano.

    Arsenal - Kosc and Mertesacker
Man United - Vidic, Rio, Evans, Smalling and Jones

All of which are right footed though.

I dont see Sakho starting just yet. I think Toure and Agger will be starters for a while yet, if fit, until they get a bit more exposure to the way Rodgers wants to play and a bit of understanding of where the other players would/should be during the game.

And atm its looking like Agger would be the one replaced long term, imo.

And that team would be my best 11, with Toure instead of Sakho for now, until we play a strong team away. Then Henderson in for Coutinho just for his energy for defending.

Completely forget about Seria A with Juve as well. Bonucci, Chiellini and Barzagli are right footed and play as part of a back three.

Sami Hyypia was right footed playing on the left. (Though to be fair to him, he was decent off both feet)
