Beware the Retro Spice Burger scenario.

    To wit:

    1. Traditional product or business goes to the wall because customers ignoring it.

    2. News of disappearance galvanizes army of online nostalgists who pollute boards and FB with retro fetishism.

    3. Product or business refloated

    4. Army of online nostalgists remember that Spice Burgers actually taste like seasoned dog turds and promptly return to buying bijou ostrich patties from the local craft butcher

    5. Army of online nostalgists realize that record shops are actually full of moody teenage cunts in stupid clothes and staffed by know-it-all, heavily-pierced, twats and return to buying reasonably priced music and games online.

    6. Traditional product or business goes to the wall.

    7. See 1.

Or their cousin, the "I can do it better" Brigade. Corner shop/boutique/fairy cake/ye olde records and dvd business opened by some optimistic but naive loon at massive expense staggers along for a year then goes bang. "I can do better" loon turns up and re-opens with a new "clever gimmick" that will surely turn the situation around. Loon goes bang with even bigger debts than Loon 1 and the cycle continues... I smell a loon...

HMV haven't been bought by loons though. Hilco turn around businesses like this and sell them on at a huge profit and they're very good at it.

Do they always win? Or just often enough for it not to matter? Genuine question.

The only way HMV are going to survive in Ireland is to include the sale of used vinyl and CDs. Like Amoeba in the US.
I don't mean buying in any old used crap like Madonna, One Direction or Beyonce, but old 70s and 80s vinyl and CDs.
That would bring me in. Stocking the same old "new" crap like Golden Discs and Tower is not going to work.
They can't compete with Amazon.com anyway if they do this.

Hope people start buying albums instead of games, this was the downfall of HMV, they forgot what they were there for . Downloads didn't help but true music lovers will ALWAYS buy albums etc.

Not sure HMV was ever really the go-to spot for true music lovers.

Game Stop tried to sell used CDs for a while and failed. But the reason for that was their shelves were chocker block with the usual crap like Beyoncé, Madonna, Craig David and Girls Aloud.
Selling used CDs will succeed only if they weed out the rubbish and pick quality when buying it in.

I saw this thread and all I could think of was that bit in the Simpsons where Millhouse is telling Bart that Alf is back, in Pog form.

The Simpsons would be funny if I could get my head around the fact that its really late middle aged actors reading from a script written by a late middle aged scriptwriter. So obviously I don't know what you are on about.

I remember the guy that owns Dolphin records went on JoeDuffy telling everybody with vouchers, he'd give 50% of their worth in his shop.
Well done to him, he's after making a killing here.

They are combining it with Xtravision which will be an interesting model.

I think people missed why Gamestop started selling 2nd hand cds. It wasn't a plan to sell cds it was a plan to punish the music shops for selling second had games. They never planned on keeping it was to shut out rivals including small 2nd had record shops that sold 2nd hand games.

They bought cds at a really cheap prices and sold them cheap devaluing cds. Don't get me wrong it was kind of inevitable but they hastened the process with an immediate effect on music sellers.

The combination of HMV with Xtravision is a very nice & interesting development.

I think that the people in those new HMV areas will be very pleased with the idea of having smaller HMV stock combined with Xtravision stock as it makes it look a handy & convenient business model.

I love HMV in whatever way shape or form. I cannot wait for it to reopen.

Anytime I see "HMV" I always think "Her Majesty's Vagina"

And I don't want a loyalty card for that.

I'd say the boul' lizzie has some box on her

    Yeah, me too.
Come back in a year. Ireland has a habit of undoing companies that are successful in other markets. It's too small and too unpredictable. We'll see.

I was in there this morning for about 3 mins. I didn't see any CDs for €1, DVDs for €2 or BluRay players for €10 as advertised on the radio. I can't say they didn't have them deals on as I never left the ground floor but nothing that I could see. Also, I overheard a woman arguing about her voucher. I don't think they are taking them at face value.

The Strypes are suppose to be playing at 12. I don't know if the barriers outside the shop are for them or if they thought people would be queuing up outside waiting for it to open.

Unfortunately for her; the part I put in bold appears to be correct about the HMV vouchers.

The staff are not accepting them until customers are registered online to hmv.ie when they get new replacement vouchers/cards. They will be given at the same face value as your older ones. Just click the link at the bottom when in the website to get the vouchers.

    http://www.98fm.com/2013/category-news-sport/hmv-comes-home-to-henry-street/

Than; you will have until Friday 15th November to use their replacement voucher.

Do you know in what way are they charging for CD's or DVD's etc? Have HMV stopped selling things from their technology line?

Is there any new things in Henry Street store that would be of interest to us?

I didn't stay very long to look at much. They have a tee shirt section now but other than that nothing looks different. I forgot how claustrophobic that shop makes me feel.....

There was a good crowd of people waiting outside Henry St at 8.45 this morning and it was fairly full of people when I went in at 2. They had the games section downstairs closed for the Strypes autograph signing which I thought was a strange thing to do on opening day. There were loads of people trying to go downstairs to browse and being turned away

I wonder if this is to stop people from using vouchers which they claimed the money back for from their card issuer.

Free Ramones t-shirts for pretentious wannabes who've never owned a Ramones album! :D

    Delighted it's back!!

Can't see many people still having them since January. I binned mine a few months ago, never thought they'd be back.

They'll probably do well initially and then with the run up to Christmas but after that I can see them struggling again if they don't learn from past mistakes.

you have to register your old voucher on their website , send it to them via registered post then wait until the start of October and they will issue you a new voucher that is valid for a month , what a load of sh*t .

I kept my voucher out of a combination of rage and bitterness at getting screwed over , I'm not too happy with this new development either

Good point although your statutory rights should not be affected when making a refund or exchange shouldn't it.

This really pissed me off as i was there for the opening at 9am and the only special offer was the bluray players for €10. Was hoping to pick up a few cheap dvds. However the new blu ray releases were €25 e.g. Iron Man 3 and Star Trek Into Darkness, which is poor value compared to last year when some new releases were below €20!!!!

You're lucky they're accepting them at all.
