Im 35 inches around the waist but 32 inch waist trousers are too loose for me

bit weird this, I always thought that trousers with say a 32 inch waist would measure exactly 32 inches, but I presume instead it means to be worn by 32 inch people with a belt?

I measured myself recently as being 35 inches around the waist, so I presume if I want trousers/jeans to fit snuggly without the use of a belt I should wear size 30 waist trousers/jeans?

Measure the waist on any pair of jeans you have in size 32 you'll find they're a good bit bigger than 32 inches.

I've always founds that I was 32 in jeans but a 34 in trousers. Keep in mind that the waist on jeans tends to loosen up a bit after you buy them, they'll shrink once you thrown them in the wash but should stretch out again after a few minutes of wear/lunging.

Surely you must have measured your waist incorrectly? If you are a 35" waist, then buying a 30" trousers/jeans seems a bit illogical?

Jeans and trousers are worn on different areas of the waist. Jeans (generally lower on the waist).

Yeah it does seem illogical, but since my 32 inch jeans are very loose on my 35 inch waist, then buying 30 inch trousers seems the only option. I dunno perhaps my current jeans/trousers have just expanded due to the stress of my ever increasing waist :pac:

Also I have measured my waist at various different positions and it is always 35 inches give or take half an inch depending on the position.

This is nearly always true. You need to go up a size between jeans and trousers.

Given that the pair of jeans you have are old, they may have just lost their shape or they may just be loose fitting. If you have measured your waist as 35", then a 30" pair of trousers will (most likely) not even nearly fit you.

Trousers are more 'formal' than jeans and need to fit correctly. Jeans have a bit more give and can be stretched a lot more than trousers can. I worked with suits for a long time and every second bloke would come in and say "oh I'm a 32" waist in these jeans...", go in with 32" trousers. . . then come back looking for a 34" waist, and some come back looking for a 36" waist...

It has always confused me why it's waist sizes they put on Jeans and not hip sizes. In dressmaking terms your waist is directly below your ribcage but you rarely see a pair of jeans that go up that far. Most jeans sit on your hips, I dunno why they don't just give hip measurements.

Generally I just go by what the dress-size equivalent is for that brand of jeans. If it's not written on them I usually ask. Not much use if you're a boy I suppose!

Most dept stores (brown thomas, m&s, etc) should have a measuring service. They should be able to measure you correctly and give sizing advice on trousers, jeans and different styles.

I find this applies more to american sizes, I stock up on clothes while over there and one year bought a load of 34 inch waist jeans but found them very loose when I got hom, have always bought 32 inch since then.

Add in the complications of different brands and shops and their own interpretations of sizing means it pays to try on a few different styles first. Online jeans shops are usually quite lucky if they get it right first time. Mine are 35s from Toronto, but all my clothes have different numbers on them.
