    Best actor ever!

Given genre and all other considerations, name someone else more appealing? e.g Witness, Indiana Jones, Star Wars, Jack Ryan, Fugitive ... anyone else out there?

    best actor ever??...nah

because he more or less plays the same type of character in each movie as your list shows

The three best performances in lead male roles in my opinion would be Daniel Day Lewis in There Will Be Blood, Gene Hackman in The French Connection II, and Heath Ledger as the Joker.

Daniel Day lewis playing a churning, gurning, scenery chewer? I thought he was taking the piss in that film he was that daft

    Best Actor = Christopher Lee

some of the stuff he's done over his career
    Nazi hunter
    operatic bass-baritone singer
Charlemagne: By the Sword and the Cross, a metal album
    stunt driver
was in the Finnish army during the winter war and then the SAS
is fluent in English, Italian, French, Spanish and German, and moderately proficient in Swedish, Russian and Greek and ..

    http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Creator/ChristopherLee?from=Main.ChristopherLee

He's 91 and still makes films, does his own swordwork, and records heavy metal albums.
and also appeared in 270 + films

A lot of serious talented actors out there and most have been mentioned.I would like to add in my two cents so here goes
    BRANDO he owns the screen
Forrest Whitacker a very gifted actor that doesn't seem to make many films
Also one of his co stars in panic room just to give the girls a mention Jodi Foster.

Brando certainly owns the title 'Most Beautiful Man on Screen''

    IMHO

    De Niro

    /thread

De Niro can only play one role, that of a New York gangster, and he plays that role in every single film he stars in. Though he does so brilliantly.

Ralph Fiennes in Schindlers List, what a performance; Same goes for Liam Neeson.

Nobody mentioned Jeremy Irons, now that is an actor! From Lolita to Brideshead Revisited, he can say so much by doing so little.

You must have missed him Gangs of New York then. And Titanic. He has been good in some others though I will give you that.

    How are they bad performances?

I think Leonardo Di Caprio is a serious actor.

Pretty much every single role he has done in the last 10 yaers he has been nominated for golden globes, baftas, etc. The breath of the roles has been immense also.

I think Harrison Ford will be remembered more for some of the memorable films he appeared in than for his acting in them. At best he's an adequate actor who had a good run of films from the 70s into the mid 1990s. The Fugitive is still a cracking acting film and that's 20 years old now. He also made a pre-Star Wars appearance in a film Francis Ford Coppola made between the two Godfathers. The Conversation http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Conversation

As much as I love Harrison Ford even I have to admit he as more charisma then talent, and he pretty much gave up acting about 20 years ago and now he collects appearance fees to stand around looking bored in movies.

You're forgetting films like "Cape Fear", "Mary Shelleys Frankenstein", "This Boy's Life" and, dare I say it, "Meet the Fockers" :D

    lol.

Last 5 years I think 10 of his fils he has been nominated for a worst actor award.

He rode the "leaving las vegas" award for far to long.

    Awful awful actor.

He is fantastic and should have won an Oscar by now. He chooses his films carefully and always does very good, interesting ones.

In Django Unchained, there's a scene where he slams his hand down on the table and breaks a glass. His hand starts bleeding and after a rant he smears the blood on his co-star's face.

This wasn't in the script at all, he broke the glass by mistake and his hand wasn't meant to start bleeding. Di Caprio doesn't miss a beat, keeps going for at least ten minutes with his hand pumping, never breaking character and using it to his advantage.

He's very self aware as an actor; he has turned down films before because he hasn't felt developed enough as an actor to fulfil the potential of strong roles and others for being nothing more than box office fodder with little artistic merit.

When he was trying to make it as an actor, he turned down one million to play the boy in the film Halloween because he wanted to do something more artistically credible.

    No mention of Morgan Freeman?

    Very over rated IMO.

A couple of good roles. But all a bit meh.

Personally thought gangs of New York was a tedious film in general and di caprio was particularly poor. Day Lewis stole every scene between the two.

Titanic. Well, that was a chick flick and again I thought di caprios performance was more wooden than a timber plank.

Very subjective this topic obviously. He has had a lot of strong performances in other movies though.

Well he cruised along on Wild At Heart for years then just when it was dawning on everyone how rubbish he was, he got lucky with Leaving Las Vegas.

    Back on topic -
    De Niro
    Di Caprio

Eta : titanic was obviously a mistake but forgivable given the delivery in every other role.

Two old and gone chaps, well deserving of a mention:

    Alec Guinness & Leonard Rossiter

Very different types of actor, but invariably quite brilliant in every part they played.

Ralph Fiennes is good imo. He was great in Schindler's List and as "He Who Shall Not Be Named" :D

Speaking of Schindler's List I think Liam Neeson deserves a mention as he's a fairly well rounded actor and he's been great in all his rolls. But lets not mention Taken :D
