generator to pump water from a 20 ft well

I have a generator, a standard one think it is 3.5 kva. There is also an unused well 20 foot deep.

Just wondering what type of pump would I need to buy to pump water from the well and the cost

While since I did much of these calculations but I'd guess you can run 240v @ 14Amps max.
I'd be thinking a 1/2 HP submersible pump. With bits and pieces your probably talking €400-500
A shallow well pump will be cheaper.. but its not as good a job..

I suppose the intention long term would be to bring electricity to the well, would a 1/2 HP submersible pump do the job long term?

That's the first question you need to answer.
No point in matching a pump to your genny and then realising you don't have enough water.

its only for a back up for the farm - the water scheme here is ****.

It was turned off last Monday and since then there is very little pressure I have to turn the house off to provide water to the farm and turn the farm supply off to provide water to the house.

I'd go with the sub as suggested. Check with the supplier if your genny is up to the starting load on the sub should be no bother if it's a 3kva. Some of the gennys esp those with copy hondas were often less than 3kva so check the output on the generator rather than go by the badge on the engine.

if u put in sub pump u:ll need 3to4ft of water in bottom of well at all times to cool pump it wud need to be good well ,i sold a few of them for shallow wells the work well but need min of 3to4ft of water ,a single stage shallow well pump can easly do a house and 35 dairy cows and it wud be half picre of sub if well failed
