I total agree I'm a resister too and it's defo way harder 2nd time round.... Can't wait till there over. I hate how these exams don't take in how good we are at our jobs it's down if the topics we need come up on day. There's enough material to be revising for a year and still fail!!!!! Last yr I never left the house for 10 wks trying be way more relaxed this yr.... These exams are not going define me anymore!!!!

Did you find that you studied more or less this year? I'm repeating the core and had no motivation compared to last year...def more relaxed as well. During August last year I used to to do 10am to 9pm taking breaks but this year I just did work hour days...don't know if that was a good or bad idea!!

Yea defo a lot less but more focused than revising just for sake it... At end day they can ask absolutely anything from past 3 yrs so its not about knowing it all of by heart. It's bout answering how they want it. I revise about 7 hrs a day not always work hrs but defo last yr I revised from min I woke to I went sleep And if I went anywhere I took a book. I counted on Thursday there is nearly 60 cases this yr last yr we had bout 20 so defo more of focus on cases this yr than ever before!!! I'm not feeling overly confident this yr again but we can only do our best! Failing defo gives u better perspective. I was first person in office to fail fae so it's sorta frowned apron, yet they don't realise how different these exams have become.

Fair play to ye! I wouldn't care what anyone thought about failing these exams, they are a painful experience and I'm convinced its down to a lot of luck on the day!

I do agree with it being down to luck and the type of industry etc....some cases I do I get on really well and others never go my way. Having failed I think u can never be too sure going in or never know if your very prepared for the exam either

Yea tho for some reason institute don't think so but then they don't actually say how they decide pass rate. Last yr I passed on all test bar Imp was only one I had red... I'm past caring I'm going give it a go and hope 2013 my year!! I think they should test core over 2 different days the 4 subjects for one test on second day and bl and pm on day one!!! Least ya could be more prepared this way u have try cram 3 yrs stuff in for both days and the things u know off by heart they don't ask... The syllabus is huge they could quite literally ask anything and any industry!!!!

That's the problem it is massive! I'm the same as urself failed on IMP ....some subject! This year though I'm thinking they are gonna bump up the standard in another subject like they did with IMP...finance is the one realistically as they couldn't do it with audit or tax...any ideas or would u agree with that?

Yea defo agree they will at some subject but who knows... I think it could be finance and I'd say bl will have lot focus. It had quite bit in mock!!! This yr I feel I know a lot less technical information but I feel my case study approach is much better! And I don't thnk this exam is about technical anymore it's bout method!!!

    Yeah, they'll up finance.

I actually still don't really get IMP and what it is about.
    Dangerous? Yes.

    Hi

Does anyone have a copy of the sample Exam Papers?

Cant find them anywhere on institute website.

Agree with Paul Monaghan that Bus Finance will be increased this year
    - what areas are people focusing on?

I love your positivity :) go you!!
Im a resiter too, its so tough but i am trying to stay calm and hope i can focus better on the day! When i looked back at last years paper i dont evn think i was focused enough to realise what was going on in the case!
Its just luck on the day, its easier to do a case if an industry comes up that you can understand or relate to, last year a case about software an intellectual property rights i think i just tuned out straight away! No good, need to stay calm positive an focused and actually read each indicator so your clear on what they are asking! I found myself writing evrything i thought i knew about a topic that wasnt even relevant to the case, but thats just down to nerves and time pressure on the day!!
These are a living nightmare lol

Are people thinking it will be more technical finance based or just more focus in general?

Like you may have to do something like CAPM, WACC, Terminal value, altman z-score... etc.

I haven't a clue to be honest... it would just make sense to push on from the plain vanilla finance indicators

Prob will be three indicators like what happened with imp last year anyway

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 285 ✭✭so_bored.com

I think there could maybe be a strategy indicator based on ranking options or drafting a mission statement like the mocks! But then again we could guess all day lol

To be honest I think they ll make the core paper easier this year given the confusion/unhappiness about last years paper. ( definitely shorter if nothing else it was too long ) the institute new sims was too long and that's why they reduced it.

But as for the tech stuff it will not be WACC or anything like that's potentially a slight hedge that u could easily work out similar to man Acc last year where everyone was going on about big things coming up but it was a fairly simple customer profitability thing that If u had nt studied it u could of still used ur head and come up with a logic answer.

Terminal value, wacc etc too technical I think. But maybe basic investment appraisal? Although is there much investing going on at moment.
As for finance maybe the whole banking and stricter covenants being put in place? Commentary on a facility bank letter? Linked then to audit and requesting third party confirmation re the audit?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 476 ✭✭upnorthchick

Imp I actually can't remember but I got red in it!

Yeah for finance could maybe be a bank offer letter or letter from venture capitalist

Has anyone adopted the idea of 1 summary file for taking into exams? And if so what have you put into it?

Not sure whether this is a good idea or not, thinkin if i need something might be easier to go to that specific file but im open to opinions?
