I also read this as 'HIV is Back'. I am, however, a confirmed 'glass half empty' person.

Wonder will we still be able to use unused hmv vouchers?

It appears you will - New HMV owners to honour old vouchers

Can't see many people still having them since January. I binned mine a few months ago, never thought they'd be back.

They'll probably do well initially and then with the run up to Christmas but after that I can see them struggling again if they don't learn from past mistakes.

Those vouchers were being auctioned on ebay for very little. Someone is going to make millions from this!

Most of the online auctioned vouchers were purchased in advance by the new owners, to reduce their liability.

Having albums in physical form does not necessarily mean that you are a truer lover of the music itself over those who don't. It's just an old fashioned way of looking at it. The same way you can be a huge fan of a tv show but not own the boxset.

It's good to see HMV reopening but I hope they've learned from their mistakes. Hopefully no more overcharging for albums and a bigger selection of vinyl.

Much of what is sold in digital format is compressed to hell and is unlistenable compared to even a CD. Unless of course someone wants to listen to X factor artistes or chipmunk techno on their phone :)

HMV need to be really be entrepreneurs now to stay alive. Perhaps going down the hooters root would be something that could work on this side of the pond.
Can you imagine popping into HMV and just browsing when a busty chick comes out of nowhere pressing up against you with the latest "Now" albums and whispers into your ear that she loves having sex while listening to track 8.
Or for the ladies they could have some Abercrombi and Fitch model lookalike press their groin into their rear end and hand them a One Direction CD.
    Sex sells.

I don't think it was hooters you were in before, think it might have been quite a different type of place altogether :P

    CD is a digital format.

We tend to forget that many of the over 50s still exclusively deal in physical copies. My Father was up in Tower Records recently buying all around him.

There's still a market there for physical copies, I myself like to buy them I love the album artwork and liner notes. I like keeping a real collection. Obviously they'll have to move with the times but I like that they're still around as an outlet for the purists.

I have no problem finding mp3s in 256 or 320 kbps which is listenable enough for me not to detract from the music itself, or even FLAC when possible. Stuff ripped at 195 kbps or lower is what I try to avoid. I also take full advantage of Spotify which is like a godsend to me. I have a large collection of CDs, vinyl and cassettes as well and each has it's own strengths and weaknesses. But mp3 are just handy for me these days because I travel a lot.

The original point I was making was that materialism should not be a measure of how much you like something. Of course people will say "buy the CDs and support the artists", but really you're better off supporting them by saving your money for a gig ticket or even donating money directly to them if possible.

The idea of physical media for music is very quaint, but ultimately doomed. The amount of plastic and paper in a CD is ridiculously inefficient for such a teeny tiny amount of date (700mb). The idea of a "broswing a record shop" is like a horse and carriage - a nostalgic novelty.

I still love browsing record stores for many reasons, such as the hope of finding a record you really want by chance at a good price, the atmosphere of the place (something perhaps HMV could work on) the people you meet in there etc. However I wouldn't be sad if CDs disappeared from stores completely as long as the price of vinyl stays low.

I suppose physical copies would be quaint if you listen to Simon Cowell's finest. I'll keep my vinyl thanks all the same.

Anyone know what's happening with the grafton street store? That link said that its already been leased to someone else.
It's a 10 sec walk to the nearest Londis shop so I'd say either a Spar or a Centra.

10c in the euro for the old suppliers, a c*ck up the bum for voucher holders and landlords and the same old crap for sale? I'd give them a year before they're gone again.

Not that the market is all that huge. Any suppliers who got burnt as going to want guarantees, really strict contracts etc.

    I give it 6-8 months.

Did suppliers get burnt? I thought the stories at the time were that most of the stock got shipped back to the suppliers or moved over to the UK were most of the stores were still open.

Could well be pulling that out of my arse, tbh.

The new owners have killed off the unprofitable stores which were dragging the Group down and so long as they focus on what makes money I'd say that there should be an HMV around for a little while. Maybe not long term but there's still room in the High Street for a record/BluRay/games store, IMO.

HMV to share premises with some Xtravision outlets
Larry Howard, CEO of Hilco Capital Ireland said: “We have now reached agreement with a number of landlords and will therefore be dual branding some of our stores with Xtra-vision and HMV. Negotiations with other landlords are on-going and we hope to make further announcements in the coming weeks if negotiations come to a satisfactory conclusion. The stores that are to be dual branded are: Artane Castle Dublin, Ashleaf SC Dublin, Athlone, Ballina, Blackpool, Douglas, Carlow, Drogheda, Dundalk, Ennis, Galway, Navan, Nenagh, Thurles SC, Tullamore, Sligo and Omagh in Northern Ireland.”

If you can read this, you're too close!

That is awesome news! The joint stores won't have as much of a music selection compared to the standalone stores but it's definitely a welcome development.

That's a massive generalisation. Most vinyl enthusiasts I know like the feel and visceral experience, not necessarily the sound quality.

Vinyl is mostly about nostalgia. If they really were that obsessed with sound quality they'd use 8track or R2R instead.

Beware the Retro Spice Burger scenario.

    To wit:

    1. Traditional product or business goes to the wall because customers ignoring it.

    2. News of disappearance galvanizes army of online nostalgists who pollute boards and FB with retro fetishism.

    3. Product or business refloated

    4. Army of online nostalgists remember that Spice Burgers actually taste like seasoned dog turds and promptly return to buying bijou ostrich patties from the local craft butcher

    5. Army of online nostalgists realize that record shops are actually full of moody teenage cunts in stupid clothes and staffed by know-it-all, heavily-pierced, twats and return to buying reasonably priced music and games online.

    6. Traditional product or business goes to the wall.

    7. See 1.

What an insightful point. If they run the business the same as it was run when it failed before, it will fail.

Walked by Henry st at lunchtime and they signs are up....

Nice touch actually, with the dog staring into the megaphone, titled "he's found his way home at last" or something to that effect.

    Opening next Friday.

for the Cork stores i don't get why they will bother trying? its going to xtravision in blackpool and Douglas?

Douglas has had two roxy music stores (one in both shopping centers) go to the wall, and a blacktrax, there is no market when you are competing against Tesco and Gamestop in such close quarters, not to mention the xtravision took over where chartbusters were (which also went to the wall) and has been as empty looking since, nobody really ventures outside of the two shopping centers anymore,

Golden discs are in blackpool and thats a complete loss making store tied into a contract in the same center Hmv are proposing a joint store with xtravision in?

 how does this make sense?

Interested about this "dual branding" that was mentioned. Does this mean that HMV and Xtravision will operate out of the same outlet?

I ask because Sligo was mentioned in the post some bit above, and HMV had said nothing about coming back here? The local Xtra-vision has been having its "closing down" sale for some time now, though the old HMV store hasn't been replaced by anything since it closed. Rumours abound that M&S or H&M would move in, though this seems unlikely due to how slow the progression is.

Would love HMV back here, even if the stock is reduced somewhat.
