I've often seen a lovely tower (martello?) high on a hill to the left of the M18 motorway when I'm driving from Galway to Limerick and wondered about it. I think it is not terribly far from the Clare Inn but can't remember for sure now. Can anyone tell me anything about it or point me in the right direction? I haven't had any luck just searching vaguely online so far. Thanks for any help.

By any chance are you referring to the Dromoland Gazebo, OP?

Yes, that's it!!! Thanks much. I now have a name to learn a bit more about it. Appreciated!!

Do you know if you can view it up close or is this part of the demesne off limits or inaccessible?

It's not officially open to the public, it's on agricultural land (owned by Lord Inchiquin, I think).

Here is some more info about the gazebo. It might be worth contacting Shannon Historical and Archaeological Society, they might be able to give you more information.

It was part of the Dromoland estate, in days gone by Lord Inchiquin used to look out at his horses. It was a spectator point, I think.

Hope this might be of help.
