some people are willing to believe anything as long as its bad.
I am very much against what shell have gotten away with in mayo but the protesters are a dangerous group of lying manipulative and intimidating criminals who terrorise the locals into silence while they ride roughshod over them, this is just another crude attempt at creating a pr scandal. same with the so called "rape tape " which was later and with out much publicity found to be a fake or the many other heavily edited tapes of shell to sea gardai attacking peaceful protesters on youtube or indymedia .
these people are manipulators , ever see that footage of Maura Harington shouting about how happy she was at the death of a young garda from mayo and how she wished more would die too?.

I think it signifies the outrage the people may or may not feel about this issue.

These "citizens" claimed they were being raped when being removed. They then promoted a recording of guarda "threatening" to rape them. The recording was people joking about the accusations who happened to be guarda

The protestors were violent on more than one occasion. They trespassed, blocked vehicles etc...

While the company followed the laws. In other words they were doing their job

Wow! how to get it wrong on so many counts!
1 citizens didn't claim they were rapped, they didn't claim anything other than what was recorded on tape.
2 Guarda joking about raping anyone is just not on.
3 people who happened to be guards? fked if that isnt the worst example of excusing something I ever came across! Put it this way people who happened to be priests molested children, see how that dosnt work?
Offering bribes, gifts or remuneration, call it what you like, by a private company isn't following the law, it's is breaking the law.

Couldn't find any story that the tape was fake only that the gardi were cleared of criminal action but went to internal disciplinary action.
Any link to some proof of the tape being a fake?

    If it happened, it's corruption.

Indeed, however - There is still corruption ongoing as we speak.

Are we going to moan about it in 5 years time too?

    1) When the woman were being arrested they were shouting "rape". There was video footage of that.
    2) The Guardi that were driving them to the station were then joking about rape. Bad taste to an extent but actually a pretty natural reaction when talking among piers
    3) They were not just violent towards the guardi. They damaged equipment and went for a president of Ireland!

So you got it wrong not me.

forget about it ray , your trying to convince some one who still believes the worst even after it was shown that the so called proof was tampered with by those sweet innocent girls ,

once again just because something appears in the press doesn't mean its true and this seems like a very unlikely story given how much scrutiny that the gardai are under in mayo.

Given the issue of the invoice it is necessary to ask did The Observer confirm the story with OSSL?

    Why is this the issue?

1 The Observer article and the anti Shell websites (shell2Sea and Royal Dutch Shell) makes it clear the accusations originate from OSSL not Shell 2 Sea
2 If the article was solely dependent on the invoice it would be a substantial risk for the Observer to print the story - especially with named individuals

Unfortunately the only way to figure out what is going on here, spit and all.
Realise I need text-to-speech to know I wasnt going to sea a member of the garda subaqua team hiding in a shell waiting for a naughty ceili.

Almost as mysterious as the two wifi.

I'll ask my kids to explain it to me later.

There's not much else to do up in that part of the country in the middle of winter other than drink yourself silly and hope the roof doesn't blow off in a storm.

Interesting, if somebody accused you of something and you were laughing it off that isn't acceptable if the subject matter is rape? Never heard a joke about dropping soap in prison? A joke like that is even in the Simpsons before any watershed.

The first people to trivialise rape were the protestors and then they selectively released audio. The Guarda spoke privately, not intended for the public nor open discussion just making light of what the they had been accused of. Seems human and reasonable to me

Context. The Simpsons is a comedy show, unless you think the guards are all clowns then their joking about rape is never funny.
Put it this way, your in the back of a hall and Tommy Tiernan is making jokes about rape, you laugh, your in the back of the cop car and the people in the front with the truncheon are making jokes about rape, you laughing now?

A girl was raped. It happened with the protesters in one of their camps.

There was no one else in the car when they were joking.

An important fact here is they didn't hear the Guards while they were in the back of the van. They would never have known if it wasn't for the fact the camera happened to be on. It was a conversation between two people who were getting "RAPE" shouted at them while working, they then made jokes about it when they believed nobody could hear them. Nobody did hear them a recording device caught them.

So which is it rape is fine to make jokes about in context or never funny?

As I pointed out jokes about rape are pretty common and the protestors made this into a big deal when it wasn't. They don't have any moral high ground given they were shouting it when they had to be forcible removed for not complying with the law.

You are trying to make it out if it was some police state action with guards threatening to rape prisoners in the back of the van that the prisoners could hear. That was not the case.

You can argue they shouldn't make the jokes but that is all. There was no threats and intimidation other than from the protestors.

Are you sure you have the right protest? I don't remember a rape from these protestors but there have been rapes at other protests.

This article confirms OSSL are the source of the claims as opposed to Shell2Sea as suggested by some on this thread http://www.irishtimes.com/news/environment/shell-welcomes-inquiry-into-claims-of-alcohol-delivery-to-garda%C3%AD-1.1493439?page=1
It also gives further background on the invoice.

Apparently gifts for the locals also [all contained in the collection of OSSL emails above]...school fees, farm equipment, gardeners, tennis court...

Essentially you can't even sell an ice cream to an on-duty Garda. So it should be obvious to everyone why a €35k gift of free booze should be a problem. Are people that naive?

Holy shítballs! Where did you pluck this absolute boloxology from? I don't think i've ever heard of anything so retarded before in my life. You can't sell ice-cream to an on-duty Garda? I suppose that applies to every item of food or beverage? Christ, lock us all up so! Should i return that packet of gum i bought today and look for my money back?

Jesus H. Christ... I think you're the naive one to even consider believing that... We'll get a great giggle at work tomorrow over this comment.

    I'm still in awe...

Edit: The more i think about it... We're always on duty, so i can never buy anything, ever??? I live by myself, i think i'm going to stave to death!!! Where's me mammy... :(

Even if this is true - I'm not sure what the issue is.
It sounds more like it was given in recognition of the difficult job the Gardai were doing in terms of policing the protest.

    are u really that thick?

While you're getting "a great giggle", read the Garda guide.

The topic came up on Legal Discussion recently.

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=84501777&postcount=87

It's obviously ridiculous that it's still on the books, but the principle behind it is entirely valid.

That refers to a licensed publican gifting/selling refreshment, not a shop selling ice-cream. Completely different situations.

    Publican?

    Where did you see that?

Most convenience stores sell alcohol. I can't think of any that doesn't.

Anything else to add to your previous over-reaction now?..
