I find it funny how people are jizzing over the smallest possibility of Ronaldo signing, yet, when we're linked with Ozil, who plays in a similar position to Ronaldo, arguably one of the better wingers in the world, we dont need him..

    Really?

Ozil - 19 goals in 102 games for RM

Ronaldo - 146 goals in 135 games for RM

    Really?

Never said he was as good as Ronaldo. I said, and I quote, that he was one the better midfielders around. Yet, apparently we don't need him.

Imagine if we did sign a world class midfielder tomorrow, this thread would die out from having nothing to complain about!

Sell Rooney for 40m...Buy the next Rooney ala Barkley for a fraction of that.. Simples!!

....oh and a proven midfielder too...

At this stage, doesn't matter if it's Ronaldo, Ozil, Fellaini or a new Bebe, any signing would be nice.

Personally, I'd make a mess of my computer screen if we signed Verratti. Not going to happen though sadly, but he'd be great.

While everybody else gets tired of the nonsense being spouted by yourself, homer, and mitch..

From my own personal experience, reading and posting in this forum for a long time now. Homer and Mitch are both excellent posters who really care about the club, at no point do they spout nonsense tbh, sometimes Homer might get a bit over zealous in his posts, or maybe its just his posting style there is an issue with? But he is one of the best in here, along with Mitch. HS has made a welcome return to the forum lately, and although he can be a bit exciteable :) he is a good poster.

Anything these guys say comes from a place where they want the best for the club. Just respect it for what it is and move on. The points are valid, the gaping hole in the midfield and the lack of urgency to fix the problem are shameful after so long.

We have had plenty of papering over the cracks through the years, players like Rooney, Ronaldo and RVP have dragged us through so many games we had no right to win etc, the squad is excellent, the first team is very good, but it is glaringly obvious to everyone (including Moyes) that we need more quality in the middle of the field.

Barring a terrible injury crisis we will be there at the end of the season challenging for the title, but as long as the club do not get that bit of extra quality to push us on we will struggle in the big European and domestic cup games imo.

Today we won 4-1 in a tough away fixture, lets just celebrate that and leave the rest till Monday

I'm very happy after that game today. The more I see of Moyes' United, the more I think that he is aiming for a style similar to Fergie - flexible with a good balance between possession and penetration. After the Yokohama game (the first pre-season game I saw) I was worried Moyes was going to use a very direct style of football, but since then the style has been much more balanced. There's still problems with the midfield, but it seems like he wants to address that so hopefully he will.

Delighted for Welbeck getting the goals today. I thought he played very well even ignoring the goals. He offered an excellent out ball during the spells of Swansea pressure and he linked up well too.

RvP's goals are so good they make me wonder what all the other centre forwards in the world find so difficult about scoring.

Valencia did okay, but I wouldn't be too excited yet.

I thought the back four did well. Maybe a bit of room for improvement, but I'm very happy with that performance in the first league game against a very good team.

Cleverley was sloppy, if we had a better player in there we would have been untouchable today. The need for a CM continues and I really hope we buy this week.

It just is not true to say that Cleverley was sloppy today. He had the third highest number of passes on the pitch, with 62, after Canas (77) and Carrick (71) and he was accurate with 89% of them. That's the same accuracy as Carrick while playing further forward in possession than Carrick did.

The problem that United had in possession was because we had 6 or 7 players who were good at receiving the ball in tight spots and so countering the pressing (DDG, Rio, Evra, Giggs, Cleverley, Welbeck and maybe RvP, although he lacks the physicality to do that very well at CF). As opposed to Swansea who had 10 players who were good at it, Shelvey being the odd one out. And to make it worse, one of United's players who struggles when pressed plays in central midfield - Carrick.

It is true that if we had a better creative CM than Cleverley we would have had an easier time today (I wouldn't go as far as to say we would have been untouchable). But if we had had a better defensive CM than Carrick, one who was comfortable receiving the ball in a tight spot, that would have caused a bigger improvement in the performance.

I do find it odd that you singled out my comment of Cleverly being sloppy, when it was perhaps the most friendly comment about him today.

I was actually going to say, but I forgot - I picked yours because it was one of the most restrained criticisms of him that I saw in the thread. It was also specific, as opposed to the much more common type of "average player" or "out of his depth today" or whatever. I probably shouldn't have quoted anybody in particular actually.

I'm not offended or anything, as I said just thought it odd, but I get your reasoning. A lot of hyperbole being used but sure jesus if that isn't a recurring theme in this thread over the summer I don't know what is.

I thought I had seen him misplace a few passes today and I recalled thinking that he was struggling, but if his passing was accurate maybe it was his defensive play, or while Swansea had the ball, that I thought was sloppy. I would like to see his tackle %, as I can think of a number of times the likes of Shelvey and Michu got around him, a few of them were unlucky, but he seemed to come off worse a few times, as his positioning was poor resulting in him having to scramble back to get pressure in.

I didn't think he was good today. Not because he's a bad player, I really like him, but a combination of things like being on the back foot in terms of territory and possession and the conditions, I thought he struggled. Although not to the extreme of some in here and on the match thread.

Being drunk I will try to be concise but, that second RVP goal was to me a perfect example of a striker at the top of his game. It had every element, every part of it screamed world class. Take Wellbeck for example, in midweek he got the ball in a good position and layed it off. Giggs got the ball in the first half and his first thought was to lay it off. RVP got that ball, he tapped it left, spun his man and without concious thought spun and stuck it in the corner of the net.

Thats the type of **** I used to do against my fat mate in indoor soccer, to do it against a Premier league defender is just ridiculous.

I have said multiple times that we did not actually need RVP last year and I stand by that, we would have scored the same number of goals without him. But that goal was different class, lots of Premier league strikers can connect with a ball and stick it in the top corner, but few can do what RVP did today, that was a different level to any body else in the league.

Just in the door from a good mates wedding - lot of United fans at it - just as the chicken vol au vents were being served, onte of lads satrted "ooohh Robin van persie......" haha it was deadly - lot of people giving us odd looks when 3 or 3 tables joined in with him....

didn't see any of game - **** it, 4-1, 3 points, rvp and dizzy snipes getting two each! All good.

Captain Morgan is a bastard. I'm going to bed.

Just in from work, watching the Match of the Day that I thought would never come. Seeing David Moyes run out of the dugout to celebrate a goal in Man United attire is some sight! Now lads, press on and get a 2nd...

Edit: Holy fúcking shíte, that RVP goal has just made 'goal of the season' a race for 2nd spot, in the first day!

Edit: Danny Welbeck just smashed the above sentence to pieces, within minutes, on the first day.

    Premier League, I've missed you.

All in all, from the BBC highlights, I'm delighted with the performance. I really didn't see us bagging 4 goals there. Swansea got in for a few too-easy headers though. I'm happy for Danny. Just minutes after birthing the one clanger to rule them all and in the darkness bind them, he goes miles beyond redemption with a peach.

I really can't say which was the better goal, his or RVP's, and that's ok because it really doesn't matter. Personally, I'm a major fan of that kind of goal which RVP scored, i.e. have to do some work first and then pull the trigger, but Welbeck's chip belongs in one of the old British Airways ads, in slow motion, set to Lackmé's 'Flower Duet', intertwined with flashes of swans drifting and gleeful children playing. For me, Danny's was Tchaikovsky and Robin's was Led Zeppelin, both genius, both assisted by Wayne Rooney...substitute. Please cheer the fúck up Wayne you visionary and crack on with a stellar season, for Utd of course.

Match aside, there's still a good 2 weeks left in the Tr**sfer Wi**ow and I can still see us eventually making a signing. You never know, if we get the win against Chelsea and Liverpool, it could sway a few want-away heads in the final hours of the window. They are going to be 2 ferociously tough games though and I would be happy and relieved with 4 points, and betting my house on Utd for the title with 6 points!

Now to read the last 15 pages of the thread :D

Biggest positive for me today when comparing Moyes v Ferguson: his celebration.

Solid and simple double fist pump with fists at head height everytime.

Somehow after over 30 years of success as a manager Ferguson never really learned how to celebrate a goal.

Which makes those rare times when he did go apeshít on the sideline (in a good way) all the more special.
    that's a excellent photo

Actually not a 'photo' by definition. In today's world, anyone with a smart phone can manipulate a photo/still (cropped video frame in this case) to suit a narrative and instantly expose it to millions of people and get a reaction. Irrespective, it is an unfortunate image that seems to paint the reported Rooney situation a little too vividly, and if the papers run with it they will as usual add flames to any fire that they can.

I thought Rooney was injured after the goal or something, but that picture really does look bad.

All is not well with poor Wayne, needs to find his happy place again. Just before he came on when Moyes was briefing him on the touchline, he had that look on his face of 'Right, sure if I have to'. In the highlights I saw, I don't think he smiled once.
We drew with Swansea last year so 3 points today is very welcome.

    Fergie out! :pac:

A thought after catching up on the thread; can some of you just be fúcking happy for one evening? Is the first thing you think about doing upon hearing the final whistle is to come into the thread and pull out the hatchet? Today (yesterday at this point) was a great day for Manchester United. Treat yourself and enjoy it.

Cleverley was shocking yesterday. He was so poor. Not United standard

He was poor, unfortunately I'd still have him in the team ahead of giggs and fatboyslim.

I think he is better than how he played yesterday but hopefully we can get a signing in before the window ends.

Just wondering could mata play as a centre mid , if so we could offer Rooney in a straight swap

Personally I don't think he could.

No way will Mata be part of the deal anyway sadly.

Hopefully Rooney stays. I think he will.

Id love Ozil but your description of him is wrong. Hes a no 10 that plays behind the striker. Yes hes pushed out right sometimes for Real but he is primarily a central playmaker.

I am not impressed by how Rooney dominated the summer at United, but he does add quality and yesterday despite all the stuff, he contributed to the win.

On Cleverley, he passed a lot and it was passing so the ball would not be lost. I just found it negative to have the ball going in the right direction, then Cleverley would get the ball and most times the ball went backwards rather than a more risky pass that might set up a goal.
Rio Ferdinand played so well, he was the opposite of Cleverley in terms of getting playing the ball from midfield, he was putting in some excellent passes, through passes to get the ball into dangerous areas.
I would be happy if Cleverley did this, yes his passing accuracy was very good, but it should be when the player was taking the safest option possible near all the time.
I don't know if he was told to do this, if he was then fair enough, but as I said we had a central back who was far more attacking than Tom was.
So if he could keep the passing accuracy but be more attacking with it, then he would be a great player.
Just found his play far too defensive yesterday, but as I said, maybe that was what he was told to do.
Another thing is whether I liked it or not, it must have been effective given how well United won.

It was the dream start Moyes needed and it is so positive to see the team scoring goals like they did last season.

Just need some signings now to strengthen the squad.

I'd agree,Rooney leaving was dependent on what business Utd did in the market and seeing as we have done little there is no sense on leaving him go as we would be short as he can cover a few positions. Also as Chelsea were the only team to show serious interest that made it even harder for us to let him go.

To be fair when Rio was playing those passes Cleverley and Carrick were ahead of him, he had 6 or 7 players ahead of him - so that means he was passing the ball to a player with team mates close to him and he had more options.
