    But different result than normal...

    Our Year! :D

The midfield has improved and so will Agger / Toure in time. Up front I would agree, we need to add

What I really wish would happen now is that those that shouted Lloyd and co down over the past 18 months when they were calling Pepe out as being finished at Liverpool would hold their hands up and acknowledge that he was right.

His call on Pepe was treated in the exact same way that his uncertainties about Rodgers and concerns about the owners were.

What I really wish is people could enjoy a win. Something we don't do on opening days, but instead you decide to put Lloyd on a pedestal and defend him like you do with Alan all too regularly. The last time you did it ending up in hilarity given what he posted afterwards.

I've enjoyed your posts in the past, but lately there's been a serious downturn. I'm sure you'll tell me to **** off or whatever, but I just had to say my piece.

Enjoy the win instead of this pathetic one-upmanship!

I strongly disagreed with Lloyd about Reina about 18 months ago and was proved wrong. I have already said that at least once before in this thread. I thought he was going through a blip, but it turned out to be a proper decline.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought we were poor today. Delighted with the result, but we need to improve a LOT on that if we're going to have a crack at 4th.

Toure was class today I thought, shame he didn't score for my fantasy team!

Enrique was his usual, beastly at the back , bit donkish when attacking but I do feel safe when he's on the scene defending.

The ball Enrique played over the top to Coutinho with the outside of the left was an absolute gem.

    Enjoy this until it's removed.

I thought everyone played we'll today, just the usual nerves towards the end took the shine off it. 3 Points , job done, roll on next week.

I'm worried about our goal difference. Even at this early stage the table suggests it might come down to that.

Very early days alright, though I still fancy Cardiff to hang on to the final CL place.

Nerve-wracking match. I really can't take another season of that. We should have been out of sight. Absolutely delighted for Mignolet though after a wobbly enough first match!

Am I right in saying Coutinho is now on corners, and not Gerrard? Good change I would think, Gerrard was surprisingly bad at them considering his free kicks can be so good.

    They split them today.

    Gerrard's corners were excellent today.

Dear God, I won't be able to take too many like that. Hats off to both keepers, the "Mig" looked thoroughly short of fuel and out of ammo at the start but when it actually mattered he delivered, Begovich is just a great keeper, dunno how Arsenal have not come for him...oh wait! :p

As for the game, well a mix of sexy football going forward and the usual watch through the eyes defending. Luckily not too many teams play like Stoke these days. None the less a beast of a centre back would be most welcome.

Coutinho/Sturridge/Aspas were all terrific moving both the ball and the Stoke defenders about, hard to criticise anyone in this area, I'll just note the "supporting" cast - Enrique/Johnson/Henderson/Gerrard were never at the same level.

Second Mingolet save was even better up so quickly

Looked good at times, looked like we were nervous nearing the end of the game, as if the players knew how important it was. How good we were, we wont know until a few games in and how good THIS Stoke are. Still alot better than a 3-0 loss :)

Thought Coutinho was quiet enough today, mybe due to the lack of space Stoke leave in behind

As someone said above, at least i ca enjoy the other games now!!

A lot of you guys moan about Enrique but not much gets past him down the left hand side. Good game again today.

Enrique was excellent defensively but poor going forward
i rate him highly just though his attacking play was poor today

It's this blind optimism that I really don't understand.

We have not improved our defence. Hopefully Agger and Toure will improve with time but individual errors, based on today, still seem to prevalent in the starting 4 defenders and keeper. An injury to either Agger or Toure and we are in major trouble.

We have not improved our midfield at all. In particular, we are deficient, in particular, in terms of a defensively minded midfielders. An injury to Lucas again and we are fooked and an injury to Gerrard will cause us big problems.

We have improved our forward 3 every so slightly with the signing of Aspas - done well so far. We certainly creating enough chances but I am slightly concerned that we aren't take our them as much as we need. Another goal scorer would be nice but it should be way down the priority list relative to a CB and DM.

Thought Johnson did well defensively today. Second half he was clam and passing out with Lucas & Gerrard.

Henderson was his usual self, but still not good enough. Good engine and motivation but only thing that stood out was his shot on goal. Great save by Begovic to be fair, but still think he should have came off for Sterling who himself didn't impress in his short time on the pitch. Sloppy for the free before the peno.

Aspas played well and linked up great. Toure was full of heart today and it's nice to see that in the team. Aside from the shirt pulling, he had a brilliant match.

Sturridge had a good game and really thought he would have got at least 1 more goal.

Coady and Robinson start for Sheffield United and Blackpool. Ngoo is on the bench for Yeovil.

FFS, I'd say you're a barrel of laughs.

We won a difficult first game against a team that took 4 points of us last season. That's improvement for me.

As for your comments about defenders, you do realise that all defenders from all teams make mistakes from time to time. Otherwise there would be very few goals.

It isn't one-upmanship from me though. I didn't agree with him for the first 12 months that he was making that argument. I don't agree in a lot of what he says as it happens.

Ignoring the odd flippant comment, he backs up most of his posts with very reasonable argument and he is, in my opinion, quite knowledgable.

I really really dislike the nature that a large number of the more optimistic posters jump down his and others throat every single time that they make a post. What the guys are actually saying is largely ignored and it is just shouting down for shouting down sakes.

Just think about it for a bit. There are so many calls that the more pessimistic group have gotten correct.

As for enjoying today. I am absolutely delighted but I won't be getting ahead of myself in order to head off more heartbreak.

Have to say for a 32 year old Kolo Toure has a great turn of foot, impressed with him.

After sitting through 90 minutes at the Celtic game I was VERY worried for the coming season. However ( and I know it's one game) the midfield 3 look far more comfortable in what they are doing.

Agger had a bad season, that happens. I expect more this year. If he can get it together that will go a long way in sorting the back 4.

We remain 2-3 STARTERS short from becoming a real challenge. I just hope the club can wrap those deals up.

Overall there are far more positives than negatives after that 90 mins.
