Why has Jonathan Edwards been relegated to the ghost town of presenting the morning sessions and Gabby Logan has got the prime job? I don't mind Gabby, but Edwards is the long established presenter and a former great athlete. Similarly, Colin Jackson is largely relegated to the morning while the lightweight Denise Lewis and newcomer Radcliffe (as great an athlete as she is) get the evening? Political correctness and 'equal opportunities' or what?

    Thank goodness for Michael Johnson.

She might be easy on the eye, but she's an idiot and should really have kept her mouth shut:

Sorry Colin Jackson is awful. Think Paula does a good job. Would like the BBC presenters get off the fence a bit more in terms of their own athletes though (MJ excluded).

Jonathan Edwards has never really been used as the main anchor presenter unless they are short of people. But he does get far more time on screen than any of the other former athletes. I guess Denise is useful as she has an insight into multiple events, where as Paula and Michael can only really say anything about either extreme of the distance spectrum.

Colin Jackson I think is a bit of a plonker.

No, he's cool, he laughed at all of Rob Heffernen's jokes & stories this morning........

PS - credit where it is due to BBC for giving exposure to RH. it was a nice piece. They even dragged Marian into it, which was very unbbcish.

    Any links for said piece?

In fairness to the BBC, at least they have former top top athletes. Edwards has really developed as a front man and it is only this year that he has taken that anchor role ( having done a few of the other events during the year) . He is very knowledgable on all events . The guy who does the interviews (phil jones) is also top notch and asks very sensible questions. I like the guys on Eurosport who commentate. Both know their stuff. But as for that plonker who does the stint with Maurice Greene, it's worse than worse.

It's wrong of course but thats the majority of the Russias stance not just hers this is a sporting event and should be about the athletes and their accomplishments. She is against the publicity and backs her government. The athletes who choose to paint their nails etc. are only adding fuel to the fire it becomes an us vs them mentality they are in Russia for a week its not their country or their problem its that of the Russian public.

    I think it's everybody's problem.

Russia has been chosen to host Athletics' blue riband event, and I think it's only fair that the country's questionable human rights policies should be subject to scrutiny while the world's athletes are there.

I don't think Russia should have been allowed host the event, for many reasons, but that's a separate issue.

Sorry if I've derailed the thread.

I went through a period of really hating Edwards when he became very smug and irritating, but now I think he's good.

But, I have to completely disagree on Phil Jones and Eurosport. Phi's interviews make me cringe, I just can't understand why he has that particular job. I don't doubt he's a decent journalist, but he's not suited for this job. And in any case, the modern instant track or pitch-side interviews are way over-done now.

Re. Eurosport, Tim Hutchings is getting as irritating as George Hamilton and Tony O'Donoghue with his bizarre tone of voice and phrasing. The other guy (Martin?) isn't so bad.

The BBC live commentators do a decent job, except for the extreme partisanship, and at least BBC gives a lot of hours of coverage.

Colin can be annoying when he's too joky, but when he does hard technical analysis of sprints, hurdles etc I think he's very good. Denise is really a bit lightweight. She's been ok this week, but in London it was obvious she was feeling out of her depth and getting a bit defensive.

MJ has been very entertaining this week, he's getting quite funny and less stiff. He's great to listen to mostly.

Mike Powell as a guest was incredible, so funny and interesting. That 1991 long jump was beyond belief.

I actually went off Colin Jackson a bit after some other program he did, can't remember if it was Who Do You Think You Are? or another one about genetics of sprinters, but in one of them he was chatting with his family and seemed to be a bit of a idiot towards them.

Along with MJ though when talking about the technical aspects he is the best of them.

I think it was Wednesday morning, during Rob Heffernan's race. Mike Powell was in great form, very entertaining and informative. He is going to enter some Masters event, he reckons he could still jump 7.50!

Its not everyones problem other countries dont have this controversial law its Russias to change.
This law shouldnt just be questioned because the worlds athletes are there it should be questioned anyway which it has, other countries can only point out the obvious its down the Russian government to act.

Before this law was passed in June, Russia had secured this , the winter games and the football world cup.
A bycott has been called for, for the winter games excellent idea make athletes who worked hard to get there suffer because the country where its staged has a law the majority of the world disagrees with.

Ive enjoyed the week of athletics so far esp Robs Gold its been terrific, Im curious to know these other reasons it shouldnt be staged there.

3 PBs in two days might be a bit much to expect in fairness though you never know

Great jumping by Menkov, 8.56m. Great standard too in the LJ.

Some man to judge a race now well done to Mo.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,896 ✭✭✭Sacksian

Up until now, I really thought that there was some race strategy out there to beat him, but I have to say Mo was incredible in that 5,000m.

The repeated and sustained bursts from 800m out to get to the front and stay there were just brilliant to watch.

Felt bad for Alamirew. Looked to be the only one trying to not let Mo run his own race but ended up getting his stride chopped up twice by Mo and Koech for his troubles.

Similar race set up and similar results. No doubt Mo is good at what he does but when is the last time that anyone has tried to make a race not pan out to suit him I mean 71 first lap, 60 second and 70 3rd lap whats the point in that when he sits at the back letting the lads tire themselves out

I would definitely have been in this camp up until today but, despite what a lot of online discussion (letsrun!) suggests, these guys really are trying to beat him!

The problem is that there's a race against everyone else same time they're racing Mo. Unless your attitude is all or nothing (i.e. don't mind missing out on a silver or bronze at the world championships), I don't see what the options are.

I don't think anyone who might be able to break that field would risk their medal chances with an all or nothing tactic.

p.s. great run by Fraser-Pryce too!
