this photo almost makes me cry ,i was about 2 feet from the photographer, with the same vantage, and saw the pain in his eyes, he'd die for Waterford ,I am getting more and more disgusted by this

he was 30 seconds away from history ,and everyone would have shut up ,as it is a man with his heart firmly in the right camp is treated like dirt .

the man never took a penny from the CB , such a gent

I must confess that about a couple of minutes after this photo while he was being interviewed by TV3 I shouted out 'Up the Deise!' in the background!

There has been some comparisons with the Justin removal on this thread but with respect, I think Justin had served his time and his behaviour was becoming erratic. Ryan on the other hand was the model gentleman and as I have re-iterated so many times in these past couple of days, no matter what one's thoughts might be on his management skills, he did not deserve to be treated like this.

SO CLOSE FOR WATERFORD, AND MICHAEL RYAN

One puck of a ball. It’s a familiar story in Waterford – being so close, and yet so far.
Michael Ryan announced yesterday he is stepping down as Waterford senior hurling manager. He led the Déise for two seasons – with mixed results – and has come in for some very harsh criticism from within his own county during his time in charge.
But had Waterford sneaked the qualifier clash with Kilkenny last month (which the Cats won in extra-time), the same critics would be calling for a statue of the Fourmilewater man.
    Ryan’s record
2012: Beat Clare, lost Tipperary, lost Cork
    2013: Lost Clare, beat Offaly,
beat Westmeath, drew Kilkenny (lost extra-time).

Listen we all were in pain that night, knew we let the game slip, Kilkenny there for the taking etc. He got his chance to manage his county, did his very best, unfortunatly not good enough. No shame in that. People told him they thought he was nt good enough. Move on ... nobody died. In the great scheme its not the end of the world.

Ha,to be honest I hope I was never heard during the interview, probably sounded like one of the fools shouting at golf tournaments but after commiserating with some of the players my emotions got the better of me!

By all accounts things within the camp had not been great for a while we on the outside can speculate all we want but we have to trust that the players do know best. They did in year one and I trust they did this time also.

That's all very well, but if the players are making the decisions then at what point are they going to face the consequences for their decisions? As the philosopher Peter Parker said "with great power comes great responsibility". The players have the power, but none of the responsibility.

So Derek McGrath is 2/5 with Paddy Power as of yesterday, extremely short odds.

Besides working with De La Salle school teams, has he had involvement with adult teams and what success have they had?

    Genuine question

Current manager of DLS seniors won a county championship last year. Other than that no

Very true but I believe it was Uncle Ben who said that to Peter. :)

I suppose if they are making the appointment, they can take the flak, have no one to blame but themselves, which is probably for the best, it isnt the manager that shot the 15 wides against Clare

Yeah but its up to the manager to provide adequate training so they reduce the margin of error in matches and dont hit the 15 wides.. which clearly wasnt happening

Thanks, not living in the county anymore so didn't know that.

I can see why people would think that Mullane would be back playing then, even if Mullane has denied that he would come back. (Mullane strikes me as someone who will stick to his guns on that one)

Michael Ryan is on Championship Matters tonight from 8.30 on RTE 2. I would expect him to clarify the nature of what happened but would think its extremely unlikely he will give names, though I wish he did. He is too dignified to stoop to that level, pity certain players could not afford him the same dignity when it came to them wanting him removed.

The ongoing silence from the players is a clear indication to me that the camp is now hugely split (local talk would certainly suggest this to be the case) and nobody wants to go out on a limb. In a way it is understandable, as any player going out on his own would likely not be able to play for the county again with this group. Nevertheless I still strongly believe the supporters are owed an explanation from someone and the CB have illustrated that they were too cowardly to do it. Their 'statement' was as poor as the players behaviour in my view and illustrates the lack of communication between the players and the board which is a truly sad state of affairs.

Extract from an IT interview with Derek McGrath from a few years ago below

Sounds like money was no object training De La Salle school teams, wonder if he got the job how he would cope with the hairshirt training regime....

On a related note hasn't the whole cryotherapy thing been discredited now as a load of bollix ??

Derek McGrath was co-manager of De La Salle teams which have put together back-to-back All-Irelands. Before playing Fitzgibbon in Cork he played on the 1992 minor side with Paul Flynn that reached an All-Ireland and was beaten playing for the school in a Harty Cup final in 1993 by St Flannan's of Ennis. Flannan's duly reached their fifth Harty final in a row, having one three-in-a-row to start the run.

Clare's glories were founded on good schools work and a run of Féile na nGael wins in the 1980s which upped the standard. The irony is that the balance of power has shifted in the wake of Clare's breakthrough.

McGrath sees the lengths the traditional counties have been going to. Waterford are prepared to go that distance.

"I go along with the theory that the game is better these days than ever. Every coach is looking for an edge as regards preparation. It's hard to come up with a new fad always. We went to Sunderland with the boys this year, stayed in Newcastle. Went out and had the crack. I see rugby schools going for warm-weather work in France in August and September before they go back to school. That is the road we'll go soon, I would say."

"Last year we were up in City West for a weekend two weeks before the Harty final. You have to create the environment. It cost €60,000 last year for the school senior team, which is fair money. We have gone from a time when we would have five or six sliotars at training to having 50 or 60 on the go, from training in the field to training at night out at club venues."

The Croke Cup final required a replay to separate De La Salle from Thurles CBS. There was a week between the dates. De La Salle had seven or eight players carrying knocks and strains and took the decision to send them for cryotherapy in Wexford.

They got there and Thurles had the same number in attendance.

"That's at €140 a pop for young lads at 17 years of age. And Thurles were doing the same. It's some investment."

He feels it will be worth it. De La Salle should provide seven starters and 10 panellists to this year's county minor side and they will keep filtering the players up.

The interview was 2009, so the 60k was spent in 2008, pretty damn ludicrous really - but not he's fault if it was there why not spend it!

Or as it turned out subsequently, the money WASN'T there contributing to the school's current difficulties which it is probably best for me to steer clear of on this forum!

Whatever about county teams and club teams spending lots of money, there is no way 60k should be spent on a school team. Not blaming the manager but I was stunned when I read that figure! School teams do not need weekends in Citywest or weekends away to England!

theres a family connection there though isnt Derek Mcgrath married to Mullanes sister or vice versa or something. but Mullane did say that he wont be playing in 2014 in the independent last Monday which would indicate if he did have a change of heart during the year he has overcome it.

Jeez that money was crazy stuff altogether for DLS school I mean its only GAA at the end of the day. You can say it wasnt McGraths fault that the money was there but it dosent look great that he was the one spending it either. That and the 1-3-1 thing arent great advertisements for him

or 3-1-1 or whatever it was

    3-3-1 I believe it was (3 Counties, 3 Munsters, 1 All-Ireland)

That concept I think is actually ok, in that instilling a belief that you will be all-ireland champions at the end of the year is something you will find in nearly all successful all-ireland winning teams (not sure about St Thomas because I dunno had they ever won a Galway championship before).

The problem though was embroidering it on blazers, that was idiotic.

I see Jason Ryan has been nominated for the Westmeath football manager job. The man is certainly in demand.

McGrath is married to Mullane's sister I believe.

as a fan i want a statement ,and i want an apology ,to him we deserve nothing from them, but he does ,I never thought i'd turn against the players but right now they sicken me

Of the 8 players he spoke to, 5 were in favour. You'd have to assume they were 5 major players. To finish off a promising year we now have a split panel and no manager. What an unholy mess.

One thing is clear, there was no communication between the CB and the players. They were going to just re-appoint without hearing the players it would seem and in fairness that isn't right.

I see no positives in this, the world and its wife thought he was right, as a Déise fan i wouldn't be following if i couldn't find the silver lining ,but my god ,i feel more low than i did walking out of croker in 08

i thought our future was assured , i felt so great in semple the last day, and now this ****e , every day the player dont speak i get more and more angry at them, if they have reasons they would be well to say them

That man is a true gent and does not deserve to be treated like that.
