Have chamois leathers fallen out of fashion for drying these days? Microfibre seems to have taken over, are they better?

This is true and for a good reason! Because the microfibre has a pile it gives somewhere for the dirt on the paint to go while drying (dirt from small missed areas from the wash, everyone leaves them they're only human, also dust that gets onto the car between washing and drying). Because the leather has no pile that dirt is ground into the paint leaving swirl marks. This is why people have moved to microfibre drying towels.:)

The dirt and dust point is more to do with washing and so using a soft washmitt (with a pile) in preference to a basic sponge (with none).

Microfibre drying towels are soft and plush and so much safer to use on today's paint finishes. They also absorb far more water and do not grab at the paint surface like a leather chamois. It is not just about drying but also preventing micro-marring while doing so.
