That is, you get nothing, nada, for coming forth. Not even a certificate despite missing out on a medal by seconds.

On a pedantic note, you do get a diploma for coming in the top 8 in the Olympics

No diplomas or certificates for Rob today, Gold all the way!!

Unbelievable morning!!! What a serious buzz watching that! Some amount of craic in the mixed zone and press conference after, and all the national media back home are panicking like mad now. Calls coming in left right and centre.

I've about 25 minutes of audio gold that I have to sift through. He's some character. I'll throw something together once I've calmed down.

We'll be grabbing him for a pint or ten this evening!

    Isn't that Chivito/Pisco himself alongside Briand's brother?

To be fair its say 50k every else on the site, they do have about 6-7 interviews up already with rob and other so dont think they have done a bad job in coverage.

Is he the oldest walk winner of a global title?

I'm surprised he's not running around with a Cork flag around him. :D

    Go On The Rob!!
Great interview with Heffernan, delighted for him!

Lovely story about a session with his son Cathal, that he ran at the end of one rep, Cathal asked him if his leg was sore or something, Rob said no, and Cathal says that if you do that in Moscow, you'll be carded, and if you do it today, I'll be carding you! Bear in mind Cathal is 8 - just showing the dedication of the whole family to the cause.

Cathal is one to look out for, broke one or two records at his age group this year already - think it was long jump of the top of my head!

Some soccer player too!! Playing with Ringmahon and sticks out like a sore thumb he's that good!

Hurry on - dying to hear it!! He's class, so laid back and easygoing and a genuinely funny guy without even trying.

I don't know about anyone else but Rutherford's gold medal last year was for me the least inspiring medal of the games.

For me it was a testament to probably one of the greatest all round coaches of all time.

Actually more getting within 4cm of his pb in a championships final after qualifying rounds and into a head wind not to mention the overhaul in technique.

Here's a video profile of Rob Heffernan that's been release by the Olympic Council of Ireland. He talks about his dissappointment in missing out on medals but that's all change now. A great sportsman.

Great report chivito550. His line about being institutionalized by training for the last few months got me thinking about just how much he put into getting this result, great to see such hard work and dedication pay off.

    thrilled for Rob.

Was in London last year cheering on him in the 20km race. The support for him was savage.

Does anyone know when his medal ceremony is?

Shortest winning jump in 40 years. But you can only beat whats in front of you.

Hopefully Menkov and the likes can bring the event forwards.

I posted it earlier, its 5.49pm Irish time. Rob is being interviewed on BBC Sport's panel at 10.15am tomorrow morning, giving his reaction to todays events!

Well done to Rob, great performance and a very deserved gold. Shows what you can do it you keep at something.

I find it funny how people expect RTE to cover the games when it lost €64 million last year and the 50k walk is on 6am on a working morning. Ain't no advertisers going to pay for exposure at that time in the morning for any athletics. Maybe soccer if its a world cup but thats it.

I don't know his age, but would he have a good chance of making it and competing in Rio in 3 years time or will he be pushing on at that stage?

Wonder what odds you would have gotten on Rob winning gold, pity I didn't back up my tweet from yesteday with money on him! Had full confidence he was going for the gold :P
Best of luck to @RM_Heffernan tomorrow in the 50km walk, 5.30am on Eurosport, 6.30am on BBC2 #yesboi #goingforgold

Must be in with a good shout for RTE sports star of the year now, and they didn't show it.

He's 35, but he said himself today that he'll take it year by year and see, he wasn't going to say yes or no three years out.

Brendan Boyce will definitely be one to look out for in Rio given his progress!!

Remember 2006 - Derval O Rourke won gold in the World Indoors, silver in the European outdoors yet the panel gave the award to Henry Shefflin  Remember being outraged at the time after Derval winning a World title!
