Anyone know of any good books on this topic,particularly around the WW2 era? I've been looking for ages and it's surprisingly hard to find

You could read Iverach McDonald, The History of The Times Volume 5: Struggles in War and Peace, 1939-1966 (London: Times Books, 1984).
It's part of the official history of the newspaper.

Unreliable Sources by John Simpson might be worth a look for a general history of the British press
