Famous Hoaxes

Does anyone remember people falling for the "Blair Witch Project is real" hoax back in the late-90s? It was probably the first widely released film to market themselves mainly on the internet.

What other notable hoaxes stand out?

    Good idea for a thread.

The 'Surgeons' Loch Ness monster photo springs to mind. The media of the day fell for it hook line and sinker and it wasn't exposed until years later

Why is it not a real thing? Have I been using pounds all these years? Or do half the people posting in this thread not know what a hoax is?

My favourite is crop circles. There are people who still think they are real years after the original hoax was revealed and explained by the perpetrators. Probably a few believers over on the conspiracy theories forum

I was going to say War of the World but not sure you could call that a hoax - more people not getting it was a play on the radio :o

Only if you hinted that the 'New World Order' were behind it. You'd also need a dodgy YouTube video as 'evidence'. They do have standards over there...

Wasn't that Orson Wells reading War of the Worlds on the radio and people took it for real, or summit like that. In come places there was pandamonium. Could be an urban legend, but I think it's something like that.

That's it but not an urban legend, it really happened. It was presented as a news bulletin and many people believed earth was being invaded by aliens.

He did do it, it was intended as a prank as they presented it as an actual breaking news bulletin.
