Right, so her 10 grand dress.

If I put on a (I doubt its worth 'ten grand' http://www.donnakaran.com/shop-ready-to-wear/dresses/...) a SKIRT (generally cheaper than dresses) that's worth that much I automatically look like a billionaire?

DKNY is probably cheap looking in Zurich anyway

She says she was dressed in Donna Karan. I'm no expert, but if a middle aged white woman dressed in expensive designer clothes asked to see the handbag, I'm guessing she wouldn't have been told it was too expensive for her.

About 99.9% of people wouldn't get to see that bag. I have the worlds smallest violin for billionaires who are slightly unconviencied getting a $40k accessory.

sure as long as you're not black you can't complain about being stereotyped...surely??

Ah thats fine you can claim racism and oppression for a billionare and at the same time sterotype someone who questions that it was a racist incidence based on nothing more than his race

because well white guilt i guess ?

So she's not allowed complain about anything?

I daresay that a worldly black woman who's not exactly stupid (she didn't make billions by being thick) knows when there are racist undertones to certain encounters. Familiarity and all that.

Alternatively, we could take the (likely) white boy on the internets word for it that she was just imagining it, because she fancied a bit of a whinge.

    Hmmm.

I take your point, but she makes no mention at all of racist undertones.

And all the while, we're only hearing one side of the story. I'm not denying it was a racist incident but I make a point of trying not to jump to conclusions unless I know all the facts.

I havent been to Switzerland but my old German teacher lived there and like most people found them to be a cu nty. They are known to be efficient and good at helping people dodge taxes, but not friendly people.

But a lot African Americans put snobbery down to race rather than just snobbery. Its Switzerland I seriously doubt they are used to dealing with wealthy black people. Like way the Chinese dont like to deal with black people in China.

Judging from your previous posts on this thread, you're digging yourself a really big hole and don't quite understand what you're talking about. Probably best to stop while you're ahead...

Didn't she cause a stir a few years back in Paris when another boutique wouldn't allow her in as it was closed for some event?

I haven't claimed anything. The woman who is probably no stranger to racism did, and I'm guessing she's a pretty good judge at this point in her life.

There aren't many white people who would come up against racism with the insidious regularity that many black people do, both implicitly and explicitly, to deny that is unbelievably myopic.

So because she has seen racism everywhere she assumes any personal negativities she encounters are, obviously, race related

    ...ah that's okay then!

I deny a one sided claim by a billionaire that someone not letting her paw a fancy bag is anything other than store policy your appeal to WELL YOUR WHITE SO SHUT UP means nothing to me

    Your own assumptions are hilarious.

You and others on this thread absolutely refuse to entertain the possibility that a black woman who was refused service because a shop assistant thought it was beyond her means, was the victim of assumptions - most likely race-related ones.

I'm not positive it was racism. However I'm puzzled as to how you are positive it wasn't.

I never thought you were a racist. You just strike me as the kind of person who would think that reverse racism exists or something similar, which...it doesn't. You are missing the big picture.

Really? Even though they told her the reason was because it was too expensive for her? Not store policy?

What kind of store sells things but refuses to let customers see them first btw?

Oh that's right. An imaginary one.

That shop assistant mustn't have seen Pretty Woman :pac:

Shop owner Trudie Gotz told the BBC that Winfrey was "absolutely allowed" to look at the $35,000 (£22,500) bag, which was kept behind a screen.

"My salesperson wanted to give her the handbag in her hand. But she didn't want to take the bag," claimed Gotz.
"I didn't take care of [Winfrey]. I'm sure she felt like this - but my salesgirl promised me she took care of [her] really the best she could. So it must have been a misunderstanding," she said.

Ms Gotz said her assistant spoke both Italian and English, "but her English isn't as good".

"She tried to show Mrs Oprah the same style in other qualities, because maybe she didn't understand what she wanted."

Im not instantly believing oprah cause she said its racism it could well be what these people say a minor misunderstanding im not believing them either mind as i wasn't a fly on the wall.

So i will come down on the side of one rich person felt like she didnt get the service she deserved and has the ear of the media so storm in a tea cup ensues cause "racism" not the first nor last time

You try being accused of racism without actually outright indicating anything racist & see how you like it...the shop assistant could have been racist, but she didn't actually do or say anything racist....so in the future white people around the world should all jump the gun & act extremely cautiously around black people, just in case they are the type of black person who thinks "is it because I am black" and therefore brands a, could be innocent, white person as racist?

Does anybody come out of this story with any credit?

The shop/saleswoman for being snobs (and potentially profiling on race).
Oprah for throwing a tantrum and acting with the usual sense of rich, privileged entitlement.
Switzerland, like money-hungry whores prostrating themselves at the feet of anybody wealthy (not for the first time in their history).

She made an assumption the customer could not afford the handbag. This assumption was based on skin color. I'm not an Oprah fan, but I believe her here.

And that would be your, and Oprah's, assumption

Part of the issue is that it's coming at a time when some parts of Switzerland are planning to ban asylum seekers from certain public areas Outrage as Swiss move to segregate asylum-seekers
Roman Staub, mayor of the town of Menzingen, said asylum-seekers should be banned from "sensitive areas" such as the vicinity of a school. "This is certainly a very difficult area, because here asylum-seekers could meet our schoolchildren - young girls or young boys," he said.

It's all adding up to a lot of negative press for the Swiss

Shock horror, a thread in AH with the word 'racist' in the title has turned into a "poor me, I'm white, I'm a victim too" tread?

    That's never happened before..

    I'm not a racist but ...
... it was a $35,000 handbag kept behind a screen. The shop assistant told Oprah she would want to see other handbags because that one was too expensive.

exactly, and how did the assistant know it was too expensive for her?
