Bands you now think are good, when you thought they were rubbish before.

Following on from the other thread, hope it's ok to throw this one out there.
So many bands I thought were crap when I was younger, and a lot of them I'd be more into them now than the stuff I was into when I was younger.
Learning the guitar, all I wanted was technical metal and fast solos, so I totally disregarded bands like

Fleetwood Mac
Bruce Springsteen
Sonic Youth
Violent Femmes
Pixies
U2
Wilco
Depeche Mode

I suppose I thought they weren't "heavy" enough for me.

It's great when you "discover" a band/artist that you never used to listen to, or was just before your time. You get their entire back catalogue in one go!
I only started to listen to David Bowie in the last 2 years and have barely listened to anything else since.

When I was in my late teens I only liked guitar music and HATED all electronic music, I would even be suspicious of guitar bands using drum machines

So I probably would've hated the likes of the Chemical Brothers, UNKLE, DJ Shadow etc 15 years ago. I'd put UNKLE as one of my favourite acts to listen to right now.

I think it was buying a New Order best of cassette in a bargain bin that made me see the light.:pac:

The National - Boring bastards

Slipknot - Thought they were just for "dirty rockers" back in my teens but they're fantastic live and Corey Taylor is brilliant.

Metallica - Similiar to the above.

Radiohead - Despised Paranoid Android when it first came out but now it's my favourite song of theirs. Same idea for the band as a whole in terms of going from hate to love.

I've tried numerous times to get into The XX, Vampire Weekend, TV On The Radio and Alt J amongst others but they're still rubbish.

Foster The People. Whenever I heard their songs on the radio I kinda cringed at the unusual sounds, but when I watched a few acoustic & live versions of them playing the same songs I fell in love. They went from a supposedly **** band IMO to my absolute favourite.

The Horrors (taught they were another NME hype band but from that second album onwards turned into one of Britain's more interesting bands)

U2 ( Bono is a pain in the ass but they have made some stunning albums)

Radiohead ( hated how miserable Thom Yorke was but after a friend played me The Bend's and Ok Computer back to back, not my favourite band but think they are great)

Arcade Fire ( Just hated the hype behind them but after seen them live my mind was changed)

New Radicals ( bought the album thinking it be full of song's like You Get what you give but was so disappointed, went back to it a few years later think it's one of the great lost masterpiece's of the last 20 years.)

That's a great album, remember I was criticised in a bar for putting on one of their song's by the barman

. It's just a fun indie pop album

Yeah I agree with this. When they first emerged they were the epitome of an NME hype band at the time, all gimmic and little substance. Their debut Strange House was rubbish and their appearance in The Mighty Boosh was cringeworthy. But whatever happened between Strange House and Primary Colours it changed them into a completely different beast and suddenly they were a band to take seriously. Their last album Skying was even better and I'm looking forward to their new one in the autumn.

back in 95 didn't like them cause they were girls (was only 14 at the time). Five years later it became one of my favourite albums, still think it rocks today.

Happens to me all the time. To the point where I'm now hesitant to completely write off any band I don't like.

One example is I went from finding The Smiths unbearably dreary and dull to them becoming one of my favourite bands.

+1 on Fleetwood Mac
I loved the original band with Peter Green, because I was really into blues, and held a disdain for the 'poppy' sound of the later incarnation; I was so wrong.
Saw them play this year in New Orleans, The Chain was immense - hair-on-back-of-neck-standing-up sorta stuff.

Also suffered the being into guitar and only respecting shredders thing as a teen. Remember seeing a Channel 4 'Top 10 Guitar Heroes' thing with Johnny Marr at No. 10 and being absolutely appalled. Love The Smiths now though (and Marr in general).

The Sleepy Jackson - I used to see the song Vampire Racecourse on MTV2 all the time and didn't like it at all. Annoyed me a lot for some reason but then I heard the album a few years later (having loved Good Dancers in the meantime) and I was bowled over. Still not crazy about that Vampire song.

Saw them live in Glasgow to promote album 2 and it wasn't a great show unfortunately.

i use to think the kills were shoite but i never gave them a propper listen .i remember when midnight boom came out but i ignored it completely , but now i think its one of my favorite album

Bombay Bicycle Club - didn't like them when I heard them first at all. The lead singer used to annoy me. I wouldn't say now that I love them, but they're gradually gradually gradually growing on me. Have only listened to few of their songs so it's early days yet.

Lover's is probably in my top 5 albums of the last 15 years. Such a wonderful album, Vampire Racecourse is the most rocky number (a but John Lennon like) on the album. I like the song.

Good Dancers, Rain falls for Wind, This day, Acid in My heart, Come this, Don't Know and Morning rain are the stand outs. Wasn't such a big fan of the second album.
