What to put under a white thorn hedge?

I have a nice wild hedge outside my kitchen window. It is stands on a small angled mound of earth that is higher than the lawn. All that grows under it are nettles, thistles and weeds. I was wonder how I would go about planting some sort of wild flowers or something that would be low maintenance. I don't know much about gardening. Any advice much appreciated.
