Nearly a goal within seconds! Unlucky Stokes!

    EDIT

Only 11 seconds on the clock

    EDIT

Izzy is poor under high ball

Disappointing that Bangura is getting booed tbh

Gonna miss the 2nd half tonight, playing ball myself, but hopefully the tie will be dead and buried by then! :pac:

    EDIT

    Mo Bangura starts for Elfsborg!

    Wheres Boerrigter?

    Wheres Boerrigter?

Not in the squad, he hasnt trained with Celtic yet so its no surprise that he's been left out of this one. Probably be involved for the away leg though

Off the bar by Forrest, argh!!

    EDIT

That was amateur defending by Celtic! Jesus Christ!

Lennon hasnt written off his future at Celtic and this situation is something they cannot blame the player for imo, horrible situation for him to be in, but its likely that this will be a situation that he cant come back to Celtic from. I thought he was very unlucky with injury in his 1st season with us and I reckon he'll be a handful for our backline. They are going to be sharp enough

Lenny may not have publicly written of his future at Celtic but a year and a half out on loan tells it's own story imo.

You are right that it's a horrible situation for Bangura and booing him is out of order.

The player we were told he is when he was signed is the very type that causes our defenders trouble so hopefully he'll have a quiet night

    Stokes ruled offside there!

    Defensively, we are very ropey!

Riding our luck, great strike off the bar.

    Defence all over the place

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,920 ✭✭✭RoryMac

    Ambrose should've put that away

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,529 ✭✭✭✭Dempsey

Whats with Ambrose and taking his eye off the ball at corners? Should have buried that!

I'd say Elfsborg get alot of injuries!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,920 ✭✭✭RoryMac

Great position for a free kick

    Edit: Sooo close from Stokes

Need to pass the ball better 2nd half and cut out the sloppyness at the back

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,529 ✭✭✭✭Dempsey

Well Im off, hope we up our game in the 2nd half. The backline need a bollocking!

    Entertaining first hal,f very open.

Got lucky there, didn't think that was a foul by Bangura

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,920 ✭✭✭RoryMac

If Balde is any way decent he needs to come on for Stokes, we really lack a presence up front without Hooper

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,920 ✭✭✭RoryMac

Great ball in by Izzy, if we can get another I'd be very happy going to Elfsborg, they don't seem to be up to much

1 nil win for Celtic but not a great performance. Samaras was outstanding but a lot of issues in other positions, the 2 x CB & Izzy look very shakey and we seriously lack a presence up front.

Can;t say I was impressed by Elfsborg but they may be a different team next week

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,666 ✭✭✭blahfckingblah

elfsborg never really showed much football tonight but theres a lot of gaping holes in the celtic defence that need to be sorted before we all start booking hotels in lisbon

They might play a dirty match next week, that's why I'm not fully convinced with than win

Was almost afraid to look at the final score when i got in :pac:

Elfsborg are suppose to be very good at home, much like Celtic are. We needed to be in front going over there so the onus is on them to attack.

Alot of rustiness against a team thats mid season so I expect the backline to tighten up with gametime but the lacking of presence upfront (evident in the first half) when teams sit in is an issue. Hopefully Balde gets going soon enough.

I'd be more concerned if they decided to play football next week, when they got physical in the 2nd half we dominated the game. My fear is them taking the game to us next week and exposing the obvious weaknesses at the back.

    A win's a win's a win.
I fancy a goal from Sammy over there to see us through

A decent enough result given where we are at with our season and where Elfsborg are at. First half was very shaky. If Stokes had of scored with that chance right from the kick off then who knows but he didn't and although we had more of the ball the whole half was very disjointed and we had some horror show moments in our own half with the ball which could have cost us.
In fairness though I thought we played quite well in the second half. Samaras got in and had that good chance right away and after that we finally controlled the game and started to get at them and put some real pressure on their goal. Superb cross from Izzy for Commons goal. A second goal I felt would have killed the tie off but not giving up an a way goal was huge. If we can score first over there I don't see them being able to score 3 times.
Certainly still a lot of work to do next week in Sweden but we are in decent shape going into the second leg I feel.

Some stats to put the away leg into context

1 loss in the last 25 matches at home, unbeaten at home since September 2011.

They have confidence and self belief in themselves to turn the tie around and I think they'd fancy their chances at home against anyone, never mind a rusty Celtic. Hopefully, we'll be sharper and injury free for the match. I'd take a boring 0-0 right now!

Its Celtic will rarely be boring. We will need to score I reckon. Sammy, Commons or maybe derk will have to deliver.

    http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/new-celtic-signing-derk-boerrigter-2116187

New Celtic signing Derk Boerrigter: Don't call me Sicknote.. I played with a broken back for two months
“It’s hard to believe anyone could think the injuries were in my head because if you saw the scans you would have seen a clear crack in my back.

“You can say as much as you want but the evidence was there and I felt it. It was a stress fracture in the beginning but we didn’t realise that so I kept playing and playing by taking painkillers.

“One day before I had to report to the national team I got a kick on my back and that was it. It snapped.

“But I had played with a stress fracture in my back for two months.

“Last year I played 30 games and didn’t have one injury.

“If you check my career out, I played more than 30 matches for every team I have played for.

“Only in my first season at Ajax did I have that big injury in my back that kept me out for a couple of months but it was the only serious one I’ve had.

“With my medical, Celtic wanted to be sure my back was okay. At 5pm on Monday night in Edinburgh I had to see a doctor who checked me and said I was perfectly fine.

“A doctor in London then had to look at the scans and he said the same but I knew it was okay.

“In Holland they say I get injured easily. But they don’t seem to know how many games I played and it’s totally unfair.”

“I love it here already. I saw the city and the centre is amazing.

“I’ve been to the stadium, that’s great, the crowd was great. It’s perfect. I gave my first autograph to the doctor. He said it was for his nephew but ... !

“Ajax is the biggest club in Holland, same as Celtic are here, so I’m used to such things.

“As soon as I heard Celtic were interested I was keen to come.

“There was quite a lot of interest in me but I thought about Celtic and felt it was the right decision.

“There were offers from across Europe but it didn’t matter. I was coming here.

“Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink is from the same town as me and we played football together on a small pitch next to my parents’ house.

“I was nine and he was 15 or 16 and not yet a professional player.

“I followed his career and knew he went to Celtic. Everyone who has played here talks positively.”

score as many as I can here. And, of course, give a lot of assists because I am not a selfish player or anything. All my life, I have played as a left winger and I also played on the right wing for Ajax last season.

“Maybe if the coach wants to see me in the centre, I’ll give it a try. I can play football and Robin van Persie started
on the left at Feyenoord before becoming a striker at Arsenal.”

“Louis van Gaal will be notified if I play well here and I hope he will watch a game or two.

“The Champions League could be important for that, especially if you play well in those kind of games at the highest level.

“That’s the level I want to play at here.”

Hopefully the worst of that back injury is well and truly behind him otherwise someone should get sack for not assessing it properly during his 2 day medical! He seems hungry enough and saying the right things to get fans onside from the start. Bangura & Balde's agents take note!

    EDIT

    http://www1.skysports.com/football/news/11781/8851355/transfer-news-celtic-manager-neil-lennon-refuses-to-be-drawn-on-alfred-finnbogason

Celtic manager Neil Lennon has refused to confirm or deny speculation they are looking to bring Heerenveen striker Alfred Finnbogason to the club.
"It's just speculation at the minute. This window in particular, I have never known so many players being thrown at us, it's silly season," he told Sky Sports News.

"We have options, we have targets and we are working away as quietly as we can in the background to try and bring these players in.

"It's never easy and sometimes these things take a bit of time. I'd imagine we won't bring any other players in before the Elfsborg game on Wednesday."

    He'd be a smart signing

Is my memory playing tricks or was there a young player with the surname Finnbogason - Icelandic? - who was been touted by the Celtic view as the next big thing a few years back?
