    1. New computer so there is little dust in there
    2. Might look into that
    3. Case seems pretty cool. Cards are idling at around 40 and CPU idling at around 30

    Adjust the fan profile?

Done that earlier today but haven't been gaming at all yet. Hopefully that helped.

Have you added more case fans?

    Yep.

    At the moment:
    Core clock 1140
    Memory Clock 1650

Seems stable but haven't gamed enough to be 100% sure

Maybe ease off on the clocks a little as well?

I changed the fan profile to be much less aggressive so I'll play a little CS:GO there in a while (It's what I was playing yesterday when I noticed the noise) and see if it makes a difference and temperatures stay around the same.

    Water cool my cards?

The source engine still defaults to a max frame rate of 300fps. Your cards are most likely rendering this many frames when they don't need to. If you go to the console and type "fps_max 60" without the quotations and whatever your screen refresh is. You can change this in the default config file as well so you don't need to do this every time you start the game.

I assume I wouldn't need to go any higher than 60 fps, considering I'm running 60hz at the moment.

I'll set it to 120 and see how loud / hot it gets. Since I plan on OCing my monitor at some point anyway.

Just match it to whatever your current refresh rate is.

This will also help your aim as variable fps means variable sensitivity. With a locked fps you will build up muscle memory on mouse movements for reaction shots.

Turning off mouse acceleration helps for this as well.

its a lovely card now that the stupid triple slot design is gone.

at the same time how much more is this going to cost when 780's are starting to break the £500 mark

Interesting from an entry level game performance point of view.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,299 ✭✭✭✭BloodBath

It's sadly not enough of a performance increase over the 5800k. If someones on a budget that low then the A10 5800k or A8 5600k is still better value.

Pairing it with high speed ram significantly improves the performance of the igp as well. As much as 20%

Both the igp and cpu can get decent overclocks as well. 20% overclocks on the igp are possible.

That's +40% performance over stock and pushes it near entry level graphics performance. (7750/70)

    Amazing for the price really.

Dead as a doornail or just not working right? If the latter spinrite.

Detected in BIOS, but not during POST, swapped cables, and tried in another machine. Pretty sure dead.

Cheapest decent drive I can find is a 64GB M4 for €70 from Amazon. I could spend €50 and get a 320GB laptop drive, but... *vomit*

Try changing from AHCI to IDE in the BIOS. Worked for me on a plate drive that would no longer boot.

Yeah I had similar issues with ocz drives, the vertexs in particular are POS. You won't be disappointed with the M4 if you decide to go for it.

I have three in other machines. Well acquainted with the M4's reliability. :)

Will try IDE. Can't believe that never occurred to me...

After an inordinate amount of restarts, unplugging, replugging and swearing, the server's working again.

I switched to IDE, and that got the drive to BSOD at the Windows logo (Thanks very much, noodle, for that), so it at least I knew then it wasn't dead. Pulled out everything, connected only SSD, worked fine, plugged back everything, still worked fine. This was all back in AHCI, so I've no clue what it was, but it's working for the moment. The drive's getting replaced as soon as I can manage it though. :P

@ EoinHef, can't blame em re. piracy, much as MS can be a pain in the hole, as a gamer there are not many other OS options (yet-though Linux is getting there).

Agree with you there, not many options for gaming. I do hope companies like Valve championing OS's like linux because there free and open will change this though.

On the subject of the OEM licence i came across this, starting to get a bit worried now:(

OEM versions of Windows 7 are identical to Full License Retail versions except for the following:

    - OEM versions do not offer any free Microsoft direct support from Microsoft support personnel

    - OEM licenses are tied to the very first computer you install and activate it on

    - OEM versions allow all hardware upgrades except for an upgrade to a different model motherboard

    - OEM versions cannot be used to directly upgrade from an older Windows operating system

    Microsoft.com ^

    OEM vs. Retail

OEM Windows 7 comes preinstalled on computers. This is the cheapest way to buy windows. Large PC manufacturers like Dell, HP etc. (collectively called royalty OEMs) install windows on millions of such PCs. The main characteristics of such systems are:

The license agreement and support agreement is between you and the PC maker, not MS.

Activation by the end user is not required. Windows is preactivated at the factory by the OEM using images and standard SLP keys.

Your copy of windows is locked to that PC. The license is not transferable.

OEM system builder is what you get when you buy from say Newegg or from a local "white box" vendor. It too has the characteristics of Royalty OEM windows. Although it is possible for an individual to buy a System Builder copy, the license requires that the software be installed using the OPK (OEM preinstall kit) and then resold.

Retail version is what you buy from a retailer like Amazon or Bestbuy. Its a full price version that comes packaged in a retail box with a retail product key. It has to be activated online via MS servers using the key on the box, it is not tied to the PC it was first installed on, though it can only be used on a single computer at a time. And, MS directly provides the support for it. It is also more expensive than OEM copies.

As far as functionality is concerned, theres no difference between any of the versions above, given any specific edition (i.e. between OEM pro and retail pro, or between OEM ultimate and retail ultimate).

    sevenforums.com

So by actually building my PC and then not selling it im already contraveining the licence agreement? HA

My friend ordered himself new pc. He did most stupidest thing ever too. He bought Titan... He bought with scan.co.uk finance... 50£ per month for the next 2 years...

I am happy he got a new cool pc. Its his own money in the end of the day, but Titan is really damn huge waste of money...

This is a known bug with ocz drives (presuming its ocz as havent read back far enough as am in work and cant :( and hopefully no one has said this already :) ) A simple firmware upgrade fixes this issue frmo ever happening again. I had the same thing with my agility 3.

    ouch. biting your tongue much:pac:

i remember the same thing with a build i/tea was buildiing. the guy in question wanted 2 7970's for 1080p gaming when they were costing €450-500 each at the time and no amount of talking to him changed his mind

the rig ending up being the single most difficult rig to get working as well:mad:

for the amount of money hes paying he could have got 2 780's

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,299 ✭✭✭✭BloodBath

I wouldn't bite my tongue. I would let him know exactly what I think so he doesn't make the same mistake again.

Some people are bullheaded though and will only learn by making the mistake or not at all.
