Verbal or Written Reference?

    I was just wondering is there any difference in having a written letter as a reference as opposed to just providing someones contact details on a CV?

    Don't put contact details on your cv. Simply put "available upon request". The company you are interviewing with will determine the way they want the reference be it verbal or written.

    In a company I worked for a condition of a leech to go away was for the company to sign a written reference that the employee wrote up. This fiction was signed to get rid of him.

    So, I'd never accept a written reference. If the position were important enough I'd ring the person's reference via the company's official reception office. Certainly not a mobile.

    The idea of a written reference smacks of 19th century practice.

    My previous employer only gives the standard HR Reference so I was thinking if I could get a letter from someone that knows me there it might look better thats all

    Letters don't hurt, and there are some jobs that insist on them (I don't know why).

    But real referees are people whose name and contact details you can give.

    Then how can you get a written reference? HR can only go by the company directive. Have you got a manager you reported to?

    That's what I did when I neeeded a reference from Dell. I got a reference from my then manager. HR would only confirm I worked there.
