1976 was supposed to be one of the hottest ever but I was only 2 so can't really comment on it.

I just about remember it.The bay was full of porpoise and dolphins, and drink driving was still mandatory.

1976, I was 12, and it really was a loooong hot summer. I remember the UK had a "Minister for Drought" for a couple of months! (media made-up title for whatever minister had water in his portfolio).

Other particularly good hot summers would seem to me to have been: 1981, 84, 87, 94.

Penny sweets cost a penny, shocking I know

And there was the half penny. Bring back the half penny, campaign starts here!

    . . . Mars Bars 8p.

then before that (maybe late 60s):

Cadburys little bar 2p (the one that is 1.05 today)
    Cadburys normal size bar, 4p
    Big bar 8p

And the flavours: Rum & Butter, Caramel, Peppermint,

Caramel became Caramello, but we lost Rum & Butter (yum) and the wonderful green-gooey peppermint filling.

Bus fare for a child 5p, or 2p on schooldays.

I remember when my mother brought me home by bus from school in city centre to suburbs, the fare she asked for would be "an eight and a two please".

Nowadays school buses have seat belts after that crash in Meath.
Bus operators terrified of being sued

We had one of these yellow rust buckets from CIE.

The government gave school children the cast off 30 year old buses that CIE didn't want.
Wasn't free, still have buy a ticket every term.

3 squashed to a seat or you were standing for 7 miles, leaking through the windows, water coming up through the floor and the bus breaking down regularly.

I remember when they were 2d.

I also remember the overwhelming feeling of relief on being told in school one day that we would no longer be learning £sd but instead an easier system called Decimals. Little was I to know that day that no matter how easy the system it wouldn't change my shitness at maths. :D

Roughly what year was that, out of interest?

That would never have worked in our house, our telly had those circular buttons down the right hand side, you would nearly dislocate your thumb trying to press one.

Anyone remember when someone got a phone call back then?

how it worked in our house was, the phone rang in the telephone box across the street, someone would answer and run over and tell us.

I remember when we had long summers; where every day of your school holidays was a scorcher and how you never had a problem getting up early, but when you went back to school, getting out of bed was so hard.

I remember holding sale-a-work's on my road, cycling around the estate to tell everyone.
Someone would place all their unwanted toys on their garden wall, along with the ubiquitous home-made rose water and everything had a price sticker on it.
I remember after a few hours you'd sit on the grass and count all the money and if you made £5, you were RICH.

I remember going to the shop with friends to spend the money-oh the things you could buy.
CoolPops, Meanies, Cadet, sweets galore, then going back to sit on the grass and eat until your teeth hurt and your stomach ached.

I remember when Magnums were considered the posh ice-cream and you only ever had one when you got that bit older and had more pocket-money. Until then, it was Chilly-Willys or Sparkles all the way.

I remember the smell of freshly cut grass and how everyone was allowed stay out until 10pm with no fear of any paedophiles or nutters hanging around.

I remember getting a bag of chips for 50p, which weren't advertised on the chipper menu but you could get them if you asked.

I remember so many more things that remind me of my childhood and I often think back and think that my Dad was so right;your childhood days are the best of your life.

I wish I could go back and be a kid again..when you had no worries and no stresses and your parents did all the fretting on your behalf.

I don't like to dwell on it too much because it makes me sad that those days are long gone, but at least I can say I had a happy childhood.

(Wow sorry for the long post :o)
