I know this is radio related but it's more technical so I said I'd ask here instead.

Does anyone know why RTE's Lyric FM transmissions from Ballydavid and Knockanore sites in Kerry were switched and also broadcast at 2x the power of the other stations? If following the usual network blocks in Ireland Ballydavid should be broadcasting on 98.7 (actually is 98.8) and Knockanore should be 98.8 (actually is 98.7).

There is an article here about the change but not why it occured: http://dinglenews.blogspot.ie/2009/04/rtes-lyric-fm-launch-new-frequency-in.html

(I know it's something very small but still :) )

Don't know the reason they were changed other than what the article states.

The lastest 2RN/RTÉNL list of radio frequencies list Ballydavid as 98.8 and Knockanore 98.7 for LyricFM.

All I see in the article is to "improve its signal". It doesn't seem to make any difference though, Knockanore isn't received in Ballydavid's coverage area except in small patches and Ballydavid doesn't make it anywhere near Knockanore's coverage area. Anyway switching them doesn't solve any splatter issues between the two of them. Plus if RTE wanted to move Knockanore's allocation surely they could do it without affecting Ballydavid's

Perhaps I'm reading a little too much into it but it seems a strange one

According to comreg technical parameters, at both sites, Lyric would seem to be carried on separate masts to the other 3 services & uses vertical polarity, while 2FM, Radio 1 & R. na G. use mixed pol.
