And then a bigger turbo to take over from the smaller turbo :pac:

If I try to build a sequential turbo set up, I'm likely to cause a black hole. :p

We'll see how I get on with the single turbo first. Haha

Having supercharged a car once,if i was doing it again i would go turbo for sure.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,930 ✭✭✭✭challengemaster

A supercharger shouldn't have any lag at all since you're not waiting for it to spool. It runs off the engine via a belt or chain.

Is there HP loss to run the supercharger since it's ran off the engine? (in comparison to a turbo)

Yeah, it's got no lag since its spooling from the engine speed, but the downside is that superchargers usually sap a huge amount of horsies (30-50bhp) just to run. You'll almost always be up on power at the end of it all, but not anywhere near running a turbo.

Caught in a lag slide, no escape from dgt... :pac:

    :D

Speaking of turbos, I'm having a very weird, weird issue with my car.... It sucks but won't accept the blow

I've never seen a diesel create that much vacuum before through the manifold

I'll get to the bottom of it I hope!!!

The first car I somewhat assembled 6 years ago (wow, that long ago :() by mistakes you learn. I plugged in the battery after the engine swap, arc arc arc, wtf, gigantic flame from the back of the engine bay :eek::eek: I'd wired the earth into the starter along with everything else you see.... Still, I drove that car everywhere for 2 years

I had to start somewhere though :)

I can just imagine Cian in his newly turbo'd MX5....

    lag...lag....lag... hedge backwards.

    :D

I just think a turbo would ruin the feel of the car. It's a NA car, and set up as such. A supercharger would give you extra power but keep you much closer to the feel of a NA, than a turbo will.

Maybe, but for ~€3000 you're looking at 130bhp from a super charger, I could have 140bhp from swapping in a later model 1.8 for far less money.
If I had loads of cash and a bigger engine to start with then yeah, a super charger would make sense but you're sapping 30/40bhp from a car that's only running 115bhp to start with in order to make another 15bhp... for €3000?
    It just doesn't make sense.

Where as a small, fast spooling turbo can give you in and around 200bhp for about €1500. It'll feel different alright and there will be more lag but if the revs are kept up then it'll be fine and driving it off boost you can save petrol.

Super chargers have there place but I don't think it's on €900 low power 1.6's.

Ah I know man! Just the setting fire part reminded me of that particular night :p

I'm thinking it's my wastegate, if it is I'll bin it and control the boost by fuelling :D

It'd be quite a machine with a 13B in there, it would fit too no hassle!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,729 ✭✭✭✭CianRyan

They fit but it's a total custom fabrication job.
That said, I'd love to do that. 1.3 tax to boot. :pac:

He's looking for more power and torque, the last thing he wants to do is put in a torqueless rotary engine :pac:

Torque, power, n/a. What more do ye want :D

Although trying to get that engine over here and then get it in there....

    But this noise....

I'd take the Lexus V8 because it's Japanese (and I'm an ass like that :p ) but the weight of it would seriously mess up the car, no?
They weigh 940kg with the 1.6 with 50/50 weight distribution, sticking a big lump of metal on the front could get pretty hairy.

    Hence, turbo.

The ls series engines are aluminium blocked if I remember correctly, not your usual pig iron American stuff.
Actually seriously light for what they are, I'll see can I find something on it.

I've heard a lot of that alright, I just can't see it being as light as a 4 cylinder turbo though.
I'm also a prick for wanting to at least keep the countries the same, if not the manufacturer. :o

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,480 ✭✭✭YbFocus

Your 1.6 weighs 130kg, an ls3 weighs in at 181kg. I'd live with that :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,729 ✭✭✭✭CianRyan

That's pretty light and does make for an interesting concept.

I still don't think I'd be into the V8 though, it's just not me.

    Edit: Talk about money. :p
