Cut of an engagement ring

Hi I was just wondering if someone with a bit more knowledge than me could explain a bit about the cut of a ring. I know that its important that the cut is very good/excellent but how is a person with no real skills in determining between diamonds to know if a cut is good or not good? I imagine it goes a little bit beyond looking to see if it sparkles a lot!!!

from the research I did before buying my engagement ring, the more cuts (facets) I think they are called in a diamond the better, like if you go for a round diamond there should be 58 (if I remember correctly) facets in it, the more cuts in the diamond the more it will sparkle, I am not sure about other diamond shapes but it seems very important for the round diamond

now dont take my word for it I could be wrong but thats just what I got from doing my research, a year later im still looking at my ring thinking wow and people who see me everyday would often still comment on the sparkle of it

Most important things for picking a diamond are colour and clarity.

A clear diamond with no visible flaws will be a lot more expensive that a slightly coloured one or one with some slight imperfections.

Cut should really only be dictated by the tastes of the wearer, there's no "best cut".

Totally agree with BizzyC. As long as the ring is pretty, and looks nice on you with a bit of sparkle!
